"As an International Relations major at SUNY Oneonta, I wanted a deeper and more naunced understanding of cultural institutions of African and Latin American origin. Choosing an ALS minor allowed me to build an informed and nuanced understanding that served as a great foundation for developing a concentration in studies of Africa and the Diaspora. That concentration in study became a concentration in experience. After working abroad in Tanzania for one year, I returned to the United States to apply my specialization. I became an advocate for increased African cultural competency and outreach to African immigrants within social service systems in Washington, DC. Next year, I will begin law school where I hope to study traditional African law and international law and human rights. My undergraduate ALS minor informed my understanding of Africana and Latino/Latin American society in a way that both enriched and guided my future career."
