New Criminal Justice Major

The College has received approval to begin offering a new major in Criminal Justice designed to prepare undergraduate students for careers or graduate study in the field.

The College will enroll students in the program beginning with the Fall 2004 semester. The College projects an initial enrollment of 20 to 50 students in the Criminal Justice major. Students who complete the program, which will be offered through the Sociology Department, will earn a bachelor of science degree.

The major will include required courses in sociology, criminal justice, criminology, social theory, and research methodology as well as hands-on field experiences in the general area of criminal justice. Students will choose elective courses in sociology on topics such as social deviance, juvenile delinquency, policing, and prisons and prisoners. Law-related courses in psychology, philosophy, and political science will also serve as electives in the new major. The College has offered a minor in Criminal Justice for several years. The major was developed in part because many students majoring in Sociology indicated an interest in pursuing careers in Criminal Justice.
