Oneonta's academic program has three main components: a general
education requirement, specialized in-depth study in a major, and
electives. This combination helps students understand many perspectives
and enhances their ability to think and communicate effectively. The
36-semester credit general education requirement includes courses on
nature and mathematics, society and human behavior and values, as well
as courses that develop thinking, problem-solving, and communication
skills.
In their major, students complete 30 to 60 semester credits of course
work on their way to the 122 semester credits required for graduation.
Strong academic advising provides assistance in choosing courses and
planning the academic year, which is divided into two 15-week semesters
with optional summer sessions.
Students may transfer up to 66 credits from two-year colleges or 77
credits from four-year institutions. Advanced standing credit may be
earned through proficiency examinations, course challenges, and
assessment of prior learning. Advanced standing is considered for
success in Advanced Placement exams, Advanced Level passes in the
British system, the International Baccalaureate, the German Abitur, and
other studies considered to be post-secondary from the perspective of
the US educational system.
Nearly all of Oneonta's 220 full-time faculty hold doctoral or other
terminal degrees. While many undertake research, their focus is on
teaching and advising. A genuine sense of concern for the individual
student's intellectual and personal development is the hallmark of
Oneonta's faculty.
