NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND
Academic Year, Fall, or Spring Semester
Overseas Academic Program
THE LOCATION: Today's Nottingham is a lively city of 300,000 in the
heart of the country, 120 miles north of London. The modern city of
Nottingham is built on foundations that date to the sixth century.
Nottingham is associated with such famous names as Robin Hood, William
the Conqueror, Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, Lord Byron, and D.H.
Lawrence. It has many places of historic and cultural interest,
including England's oldest pub, built in 1189, and Nottingham Castle. A
national poll named the city as having the best quality of life in Great
Britain.
THE HOST INSTITUTION: Founded in 1970 as Nottingham Polytechnic,
Nottingham Trent University (NTU) acquired its university status and
current name in 1992. Nottingham Trent is one of the largest
universities in the United Kingdom, with 23,000 students in over 400
undergraduate and graduate courses. The university has 27 departments in
nine faculties in three separate locations in and around Nottingham.
"According to a[n NTU] student survey, the best aspects of the
University are the city of Nottingham and its nightlife, good courses,
the atmosphere, the friendly and helpful people"
THE EXCHANGE AGREEMENT: SUNY-Oneonta students may attend the Nottingham
Trent University for the Fall Semester, the Spring Semester, or the
entire academic year. Each August, Oneonta welcomes students from
Nottingham Trent for Fall Semester studies. The number of students who
participate in the reciprocal exchange agreement is limited.
COURSE OFFERINGS: The university's nine faculties are Art & Design,
Business, Economics & Social Sciences, Education, Engineering &
Computing, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Law, and Science &
Mathematics. Fields of study within these faculties include such diverse
subjects as cinema studies, drama, education, English, European studies,
fashion, geography, graphics, psychology, and urban studies.
CLASS STRUCTURE: Semester I is from late September to early February
with a three-week Christmas vacation. Semester II is from early February
to late June with a three-week break for Easter. Exchange students must
meet the same requirements as other NTU students in terms of attendance,
assignments, etc. Students are required to enroll in 60 UK credits (18
US credits). No more than 60 UK credits can be transferred.
CAMPUSES: The university's three campus locations are City Site, Clifton
Campus, and Clifton Hall. City Site, in the heart of the city, is the
largest of the three, with six of the nine faculties there. Clifton
Campus is four miles from the city center and is the base for the
Faculties of Humanities and Science & Mathematics. Clifton Hall is a
short walk from the Clifton Campus through a small English village with
thatched cottages. This Georgian manor house accommodates the Faculty of
Education.
ACCOMMODATIONS: International students are generally housed at Peverell
Hall on the Clifton Campus. Peverell Hall is self-catering, with
fully-equipped kitchen and dining facilities. There are twelve other
residence halls at which international students may be housed, depending
on availability. Homestays or privately rented apartments are also
available.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: About one in five residents of Nottingham is
a full-time student, so the city has the facilities and entertainment
that students want and need. Nottingham is known for its fashion and
textile industry, shopping, sports scene, and pubs. There are also
numerous parks, picturesque villages, and good walking country within
easy distance to the city.
INTERNATIONAL OFFICE: Nottingham Trent University's International Office
provides support services to international students, including an
orientation program, host family opportunities, and a weekly coffee hour
at both the City and Clifton campuses. "Introducing Britain", an
optional two-week extensive orientation course for credit, is offered
before the Fall and Spring Semesters. NTU will send further information
about this course.
