Building a Welcoming Campus Community: Conversations for Understanding and Inclusion Seminars

During 2005-06, the College contracted Bates Consultants to develop a diversity model on building a welcoming campus community and to facilitate a series of diversity seminars for employees.  The Office is committed to “capacity building” by having a critical mass of individuals with the knowledge, skills, and tools to provide equity, diversity, and inclusion- related seminars/workshops, programming, and other activities.  In 2007, Bates Consultants held a week-long train-the-trainers session on Building a Welcoming Campus Community model.  Ten employees participated in the training (Appendix V). This cohort of trainers is capable of, and willing to, co-facilitate the Building a Welcoming Campus Community seminars.

In the past, the seminars were designed for employees.  The Student Association asked the Office to offer the seminars to the student body.  The Office of Equity and Inclusion negotiated with Bates Consultants to adapt the model for the student population.  Presently, we can serve both employees and students.
