E-Mail Scam Warning

To:  All Faculty, Staff and Students:
From:  Office of I.T. Security
Date: September 23, 2008

Some of our staff have recently received an email message asking for “confirmation of users’ identities” including username, password and date of birth.  The messages warn of impending account expiration unless a response is received.  These messages are not legitimate, and are intended to steal information including your account access.  We are aware of accounts that were compromised and used to send large quantities of spam email, directly affecting our email service.

No legitimate person or office associated with the College (or indeed, any reputable organization) will EVER ask you to reveal your password, social security number, date of birth, or other personal information in an email or telephone call.  Never respond to such an e-mail or phone call, and contact the I.T. Security Office at 436-2628 or the I.T. Help Desk at 436-4567 if you have any questions or concerns.

If you responded to the message such as the example below by revealing your password or other personal information, please contact I.T. Security Administrator Lesley Bidwell at 436-2628 as soon as possible.

Credit Card Scams

It has been reported that several downstate colleges have had problems with companies offering credit cards to their students.  These solicitations have occurred not only on campus, but, in downtown areas as well, and often involve giveaways as incentives to participate.  Students are advised to be on guard against these types of solicitations as some of these offers may be an attempt at identity theft.  Other solicitations may be from companies offering legitimate credit cards but with high interest rates that may not be a good financial decision for a student.  If you believe you are the victim of an attempted credit card scam, please contact the University Police Department at 436-3550.
