Social Norms Marketing Campaign \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The College at Oneonta has been conducting a social norms marketing campaign to challange students' misperceptions about the drink and drug use habits of their peers. The campaign is designed to provide accurate information about alcohol and drug use by students, thereby reinforcing healthy norms for behavior related to alcohol and drug use.

The campaign has been developed by the AOD Committee and the Red Dragon Design Team. As part of the "social marketing campaign," posters designed to reinforce the more moderate and healthy choices of students are being displayed throughout campus. The message is also being communicated in other media including radio, TV., classroom and residence hall presentations.

Students Have Reported That Within the Last Year
74% - Have not performed poorly on a test due to AOD use.
63% - Have not missed class due to AOD use.
71% - Use alcohol once or less per week.
61% - Consume 0-5 drinks per week.

Faculty, Staff and students are encouraged to engage in dialogue regarding the data to reinforce the campaign. Students often have questions and comments when they are informed of the accurate social norms. Some students may comment that the information sounds about right to them, that they are aware that many of their peers are low to moderate users of alcohol. Other students may doubt the information and insist that it is inaccurate, that students mst have lied on the survey, etc. Keep in mind, however, that if all the students believed the posters and media immediately (and thus accurately perceived the social norms), there wouldn't be a misperception to correct!
