INTRODUCTION

During every Fall semester, qualified students (Sophomore-Senior) may enroll in PROF209 - Peer Counseling Training.  This course introduces students to a variety of skills to enable them to assist fellow students on their academic journey.  Areas include:  interpersonal skills, academic adjustment counseling, college regulations and procedures, and community resources.

Students who have taken the course report that they are very confident that they will be able to assist their peers in a competent, friendly, and confidential manner.

This is a letter-graded course carrying three (3) upper-division credits.  Students who complete this course with a grade of "B" or better are offered the opportunity to enroll in PROF210 - Peer Counseling Practicum in the Spring semester.  Here, trained Peer Counselors have the opportunity to put their learning to practical use by counseling individual students.  This hands-on semester serves as a bridge between school learning and practical experience. Students who have completed these two courses report that while they learned valuable skills, they also were afforded an opportunity to "give back" to the EOP family.

An additional opportunity for students who are interested in continuing with their counseling experience is the “Resident Peer Counselor” program which will be completed during the Educational Opportunity Program’s Summer Academy for incoming freshman students.  Students who have successfully completed both PROF 209 and PROF 210 are eligible for consideration.

If you would like more information about any of these opportunities, please contact Danielle Tonner, EOP Counselor and Instructor at ext. 3094 or tonnerdd@oneonta.edu.
