The College provides electronic mail resources to members of the College community to support their teaching, learning, scholarship, and service. Users of College e-mail must be aware of and abide by other applicable federal, state, and College policies, including the College's Policy for Use of Campus Information Technology, Computer Usercode Agreement, and Guidelines for Broadcast Email Messages.
The College will make every effort to ensure but cannot completely guarantee the privacy of e-mail because of the nature and technology of electronic communication. That is, users should expect that e-mail may be insecure because of external factors such as lost or stolen passwords and computer "hacking." Users should also be aware that the College's backup files may contain copies of e-mail received through the College's network, even if those e-mail messages have been deleted from the users' accounts.
Though e-mail messages are not monitored, the College does maintain the right, as owner of the campus network and servers, to review e-mail messages or monitor e-mail in extraordinary circumstances and for compelling reasons. These situations may pose a threat to College property, to College computer systems (e.g., hackers or viruses), or to a member or members of the College community. Permission to monitor or review e-mail under these circumstances may be granted only by the College President or his/her designee. The electronic records involved will continue to remain confidential material unless subpoenaed or used in court proceedings.
