SUNY-ONEONTA BIOLOGY STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARDS

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Biology Department faculty of the SUNY College at Oneonta honored several students for outstanding scholarship at a gathering on campus on April 7.

Adrian Sullivan of Yonkers received the Jan Kee Ang Memorial Award for his outstanding academic performance as a senior biology major. Samantha Kamp, a freshman biology major from Bainbridge, received the 2007-2008 Jan Kee Ang Scholarship.

The award and the scholarship are presented in memory of SUNY-Oneonta faculty member Jan Kee Ang, who is remembered as a superb and dedicated teacher. Following his death in 1975, his colleagues endowed an award to honor outstanding biology majors. The scholarship was established by Ang's family.

Elizabeth Beliveau, a junior from Putnam Valley, received the Corning Award for Excellence in Microbiology. The award is supported by Corning Incorporated of Oneonta.

The 2007-2008 Biology Scholarship Award was presented to Julie Anna Sosenko, a sophomore biology major from Johnson City.

The John G. New Scholarship--established by alumni, colleagues, and family members in memory of the late professor of biology--went to two juniors majoring in environmental sciences with an environmental biology concentration: Matthew Jones of Unadilla and Karen Prime of Greenwich.

The Biological Field Station's summer internship was awarded to John Denby, a senior from East Setauket majoring in environmental sciences with an environmental biology concentration.

The SUNY College at Oneonta, which enrolls over 5,800 students, is a liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus. Established as a state normal school in 1889 and incorporated as a founding member of the state university system in 1948, the College is well known for its outstanding faculty, strong academic programs, community service and character-building activities, and scenic campus.
