SUNY ONEONTA STUDENTS PLAN RALLIES AGAINST BUDGET CUTS

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Students at the SUNY College at Oneonta will hold rallies in the main quad on campus from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday, October 26, and Thursday, October 29, to protest Governor Paterson’s budget cuts to SUNY.

The rallies, designed to raise awareness about the impact of budget cuts on the SUNY system, will encourage students to sign a petition to be sent to the Governor. Students will also be urged to call their state legislators to voice their opinions about the budget reductions.

Governor Paterson’s executive order of October 6 cut all state agencies by 11 percent, which amounted to a $90 million reduction in state support for SUNY. He is reportedly considering additional reductions to the SUNY budget.

The rally at SUNY Oneonta on Monday will be the first in the SUNY Student Assembly’s "Many Voices, One SUNY" campaign, which has organized protests on all 64 SUNY campuses.

More information about the rallies is available from Juliette Price, Director of Communications for the SUNY Student Assembly, at (607) 221-9345.
