SIX SUNY-ONEONTA STUDENTS WIN SUNY CHANCELLOR'S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Six seniors from the SUNY College at Oneonta were among a select group of State University of New York students chosen to receive the 2008 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. SUNY Chancellor John B. Clark will present the awards to the students at a reception in their honor at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany on April 7.

The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence is the highest honor that SUNY bestows upon students. It is presented annually to SUNY students who demonstrate academic excellence and integrate it with other qualities such as leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, entrepreneurship, or career achievement.

The six SUNY-Oneonta students chosen by SUNY to receive the 2008 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence are as follows:

  • Veronica Acevedo, dual major in Child & Family Studies and Theatre, from Oneonta, NY
    Veronica was named to the Dean's List four times. She is President of the Phi Upsilon Omicron Human Ecology Honor Society and the Human Ecology Club. She has provided leadership in awareness and fundraising for Bassett Hospital, the Bugbee Children's Center, and domestic violence programs. She produced and directed The Vagina Monologues to benefit the Violence Intervention Program of Opportunities for Otsego as part of a campaign to raise awareness of violence against girls and women.
  • Kathryn Burkhardt, Political Science major, from Croton-on-Hudson, NY
    Kathryn is a Dean's List student and the recipient of numerous academic awards and scholarships. She is the Vice President of the Pi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society and the Pre-Law Society. She worked with the ambassador and staff of the Moroccan Mission to the United Nations. She participates in campus fundraising activities for causes such as the National Kidney Foundation and St. Jude's Hospital for Children.
  • Elizabeth Cousineau, dual major in Adolescence Education: Earth Science and Earth Science, from Amsterdam, NY
    Elizabeth is an award-winning scholar in Earth Sciences. She is the founding member and co-organizer of the Assembly of Women in Earth Sciences, volunteers as a lab assistant and camp counselor for the PR2EPS Summer Science Camp for high school students, and presented her original research on the Effect of Inquiry-Based Instruction on Conceptual Growth at the March meeting of the Geological Society of America.
  • Jennifer Fernandez, Communication Studies major, from New York City
    Jennifer, who has a minor in Public Relations, has been a Dean's List student for the past two years. She is co-author of a state-wide educational campaign regarding alcoholism and substance abuse, which has become an annual initiative at SUNY-Oneonta. She is the Events Chairperson of the Communication Arts Society and Past President of the Terpsichorean Dance Company. A talented artist, choreographer, and dancer, she has premiered seven original pieces while supporting herself through college with jobs such as student residence hall advisor and student manager of the Morris Conference Center.
  • Jenna Foster, dual major in Childhood Education and Spanish, Ashville, NY
    Jenna has been inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Sigma Iota honor societies. She is a member of the Hispanic Organization for Learning Advancement. She volunteered to travel to Managua, Nicaragua, to help build a school and teach young Nicaraguan children, and she works with Harvest of Hope to support migrant farm workers. She participated in the Valparaiso, Chile, study-abroad program, spending five months in Chile learning and developing a broad understanding of Latin culture in her quest to be a better global citizen.
  • Matthew Harrington, Communication Studies major, from Eagle Bridge, NY
    Matthew has been inducted into the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, and he has been a Dean's List student since 2005. He is President of the Senior Class, and he serves as a tutor and teaching assistant in communication classes. He is very involved in Residence Life and has authored The Resident Advisor Survival Guide, a manual to assist new resident advisors in making ethical decisions. He worked with New Directions Consulting, Inc., in an internship in preparation for a career in public relations.
Since the program was implemented in 1998, fifty-two Oneonta students have received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, including thirty-nine in the past six years.
