EVENT AT SUNY ONEONTA TO CELEBRATE TEACHING

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Professor Candace Young of the Political Science Department at Truman State University will present the keynote address at the sixth annual Celebration of Teaching on Thursday, November 5, in the Hunt College Union at the SUNY College at Oneonta.  At the event, several SUNY Oneonta faculty and staff will offer workshops and poster presentations related to teaching. Admission to the event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.

Dr. Young will present her keynote address, entitled "Thinking Strategically: How Assessment Can Advance Teaching and Learning," at 2:15 p.m. in the Hunt Union Ballroom. Young, who holds a doctorate from the University of Missouri and has taught at Truman State since 1980, conducts research on higher education policy, assessment of student learning, program evaluation, and legislators’ use of information.

SUNY Oneonta faculty and staff will offer a number of sessions as part of the Celebration of Teaching on November 5:

> 10 a.m. in the Leatherstocking Room: "Talking About Writing: A Roundtable Discussion" by William Benedict, Suzanne Black, Richard Lee, Anna Stave, Moussa Traore, and Steven Walsh.

> 10 a.m. in the Union Square: "International Faculty Teaching at U.S. Colleges" by Dale Capristo, Hanfu Mi, Nithya Iyer, Ho Hon Leung, and Penina Kamina.

> 11:15 a.m. in the Waterfront: "Should We Develop a Faculty Center for Academic Excellence?" by Jacqueline Bennett, Gwen Crane, Jim Greenberg, Doug Shrader, and Donna Vogler.

> 1 p.m. in the Waterfront: "Student Retention: Using Data from Withdrawal Surveys, NSSE and the Student Opinion Survey to Inform Practice" by Steve Perry.

> 3:45 to 5 p.m. in the Ballroom: Poster Sessions.

On Friday, November 6, at Noon in the Union Square, Savannah Bao and Carol Mandzik of SUNY Oneonta will present "The Internationalization of US Higher Education."
