SUNY ONEONTA MASTER'S PROGRAM IN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY PREPARES TEACHERS FOR ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATION

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY College at Oneonta now offers a Master of Science in Education program in Educational Technology to prepare teachers to use state-of-the-art technologies in the classroom to meet educational standards.

The MS Ed: Educational Technology Specialist (K-12) degree program is designed to prepare teachers to apply for professional certification in Educational Technology and to earn the master's degree required to apply for professional certification in their field of initial certification. Teachers who already hold permanent or professional certification can complete technology courses to prepare for a supplemental certificate in Educational Technology.

Many of the courses in the part-time program, which requires 36 to 39 credits, are offered as hybrid online courses that combine face-to-face interaction and online work. The courses are currently offered in the late afternoons and evenings to accommodate the schedules of working teachers, but the College is exploring the possibility of offering the program on a full-time basis. Teachers can also register for courses on a non-degree basis for professional development.

This semester, SUNY Oneonta is offering two courses for the program:

  • "Integrating Technology in Education," which explores the potential of computer technology to facilitate curriculum integration, problem solving, and the teaching and learning of knowledge in various content areas. The course focuses on software exploration and facilitation, the development of technology integration plans, and a review of current research pertaining to technology in education.
  • "Instructional Technology Design Principles," which focuses on the relationships between learning theory and human-computer interaction. Students explore or design products around technology integration issues such as the changing roles of students and teachers, learning technologies that meet P-12 special needs, designing curricular units with consideration for human-computer interaction, and integrating technology into academic domains.

The College is currently accepting applications for the program. More information about the MS Ed: Educational Technology Specialist (K-12) program is available from Dr. Joanne Curran, Associate Dean of Education at SUNY Oneonta, at (607) 436-2541.
