ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Thirteen students from the Habitat for Humanity club at the SUNY College at Oneonta will travel to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to assist in rebuilding efforts in the Biloxi area during their winter break from February 21 through March 1. The volunteers will work with the Bay Waveland Area Habitat for Humanity to build houses for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina more than three years ago.
The students will stay at the Lagniappe Presbyterian Church in Bay Saint Louis, where they will sleep in sleeping bags in bunkhouses. They will work eight hours per day on various phases of construction of the houses.
The SUNY Oneonta Habitat for Humanity club has been highly involved with local Habitat projects, and the club has applied for affiliation with the Otsego County chapter. In addition to helping with construction projects on weekends, the club has worked on a fundraising luncheon to raise funds for the Otsego County chapter and for future trips to other areas in need. The students have been instrumental in coordinating meals, which are brought to the site for the Habitat volunteer workers.
Students in the SUNY Oneonta Habitat for Humanity club have learned new skills by working on local Habitat homes, where they have raked rocks, spread top soil, painted, and helped put up drywall. Volunteers from SUNY Oneonta, including students, faculty, and staff, have made several trips to the Gulf Coast to assist with hurricane relief since 2005.
