ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The New York State Council on the Arts recently invited SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Janet Nepkie of the Music Department of the SUNY College at Oneonta to participate in its Cultural Blueprints program. The program is designed to identify regional challenges and opportunities for coordinated action by the arts, economic development, and philanthropic communities.
Dr. Nepkie led two 70-minute discussions on "Intellectual Capital and Workforce Development" during the Mohawk Valley session earlier this month.
Speakers at the Cultural Blueprints session included New York State Assemblypersons RoAnn M. Destito and David R. Townsend as well as Heather Hitchens, Executive Director of the New York State Council on the Arts. Conference participants included arts professionals, economic development experts, private philanthropists, tourism professionals, public officials, artists, and business, education, and community leaders who considered the issues and opportunities in the Mohawk Valley during facilitated work sessions.
A member of the SUNY Oneonta Music Department faculty since 1970, Dr.
Nepkie led the development of the College's distinctive and very popular
Music Industry program. She has also served as President of the national
Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association, organized
conferences on Academic Intellectual Property, and served as a trustee of
the Copyright Society of the USA. An accomplished cellist, Dr. Nepkie has
performed with the Catskill Symphony, Utica Symphony, and Glimmerglass
