SPEAKER AT SUNY ONEONTA TO DISCUSS "THE UNDETECTED RAPIST"

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- As the conclusion of the Red Flag Campaign at the SUNY College at Oneonta, national expert Dr. David Lisak, an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts--Boston, will offer presentations on "The Undetected Rapist" on Wednesday, November 4, in the ballroom of the Hunt College Union.

At noon on November 4, Dr. Lisak will speak with SUNY Oneonta campus professionals and colleagues from nearby institutions. At 3 p.m., he will offer a special presentation for law enforcement officials co-sponsored by the Opportunities for Otsego Violence Intervention Program. At 8 p.m., he will offer a presentation that is open to all. Admission to the evening event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.

According to Dr. Lisak’s research, the majority of rapes are committed by "undetected" rapists--men who commit rapes but who are either not reported or not prosecuted for their crimes. At SUNY Oneonta, he will discuss the ramifications of his research for sexual assault prevention educators, law enforcement officials, and the general public.

According to Dr. Lisak, "undetected" rapists almost never inflict visible, physical injuries on their victims. Their crimes are characterized by extensive planning and premeditation, the frequent use of alcohol and other drugs to render their victims vulnerable, and the use of sufficient force and threats to terrify their victims into submission. A majority of "undetected" rapists are serial offenders, and a majority commit other forms of violence.

In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Lisak serves on the faculty of the National Judicial Education Program and the American Prosecutors Research Institute, and he consults frequently with law enforcement and prosecutors on sexual violence and homicide cases across the country. He has conducted workshops in more than 40 states and consults widely with universities, the military, and other institutions regarding sexual assault prevention and policies.

Dr. Lisak’s appearance at SUNY Oneonta is sponsored by the PAIRS Committee (Prevention, Awareness & Intervention for Relationship violence & Sexual assault) and the Public Events Committee. More information is available from SUNY Oneonta Health Educator Rebecca Harrington at (607) 436-3540.
