SUNY ONEONTA TO HONOR AREA TEACHERS
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The
Secondary Education
Department of the SUNY College at Oneonta will present Awards for
Exemplary Service to six teachers at the annual Celebration of Teaching
Reception at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, in the Craven Lounge of the
College's Morris Conference Center. Part of National Teacher Appreciation
Week, the reception also recognizes all area teachers who have contributed
their time and expertise to the College's Secondary Education program.
The following teachers have been named 2009 recipients of the Exemplary
Service Award:
- Amy Bliss, who will receive the award in Mathematics Education, has
been an educator for 31 years, the last 30 of them at Schenevus Central
School, where she teaches a wide range of mathematics courses from Math
6 to college-level Pre-calculus. A resident of Cooperstown, she holds a
bachelor's degree and a master's degree from SUNY Oneonta.
- Robert A. Monro, award recipient in Social Studies Education, has
taught eighth grade social studies at Bainbridge-Guilford Middle School
for eight years, where he also serves as varsity track coach. He holds a
bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware and a master's from
the University of New England.
- Len Romano, who will receive the award in Social Studies Education,
is a graduate of Roger Williams University, Brooklyn College, and New
York University. He has taught at Northport High School on Long Island
for most of his 36-year teaching career. A resident of Ronkonkoma, he
currently teaches tenth grade global history and geography and serves as
Vice President of the New York State Council for the Social Studies.
- Ellen Schmitt, who will receive the award in Family and Consumer
Sciences Education, teaches at Unatego Jr.-Sr. High School. She
completed her bachelor's degree at SUNY Oneonta.
- Kim L. Back, award recipient in English Education, teaches English
11 and 12 and coordinates the Children and Education Career Academy at
Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, where she has taught for the past
four years of a teaching career of over 20 years. Her bachelor's and
master's degrees are from SUNY Oneonta.
- Kristy McElhinny, who will receive the award in Science Education,
has taught Biology 9-12 at Afton High School for eight years. A resident
of Harpursville, she earned her bachelor's degree from SUNY Geneseo and
her master's from SUNY Oneonta.
To be eligible for the Awards for Exemplary Service, a teacher must have
a minimum of five years of experience working with the College as a
cooperating teacher or college supervisor. The teachers, who serve as role
models for SUNY Oneonta students, must demonstrate high standards of
knowledge in content and pedagogy, service to the school and community, and
a love of learning.
