SUNY-ONEONTA TO SHOWCASE STUDENT RESEARCH

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY College at Oneonta will present Student Research Day on Wednesday, April 16, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the Morris Conference Center on campus. Admission is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.

The event will highlight research conducted by SUNY-Oneonta students with the guidance of faculty members. Student Research Day will include presentations by students about their projects, poster sessions, and a keynote address by distinguished alumnus Dr. Margie Clapper, a 1980 graduate who is currently Director of Chemoprevention Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Dr. Clapper, who holds a bachelor's degree in Biology from SUNY-Oneonta and a doctorate in Genetics and Cell Biology from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, will present her talk entitled "Promising Strategies for the Prevention of Cancer" at 2:15 p.m. in the Otsego Grille of the Morris Conference Center.

At Fox Chase Cancer Center in 1991, Dr. Clapper established a research program, one of the first of its kind nationally, to develop therapies for cancer chemoprevention--the use of natural or synthetic substances to prevent cancer. The program has been funded continuously by grants from the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, and recently through a multimillion-dollar award from Fox Chase Cancer Center. The program aims to accelerate the discovery of both molecular markers of cancer risk and personalized cancer prevention strategies.

Over 120 students, representing a range of disciplines and academic majors, will present the results of their research projects, which were conducted under the supervision of one or more faculty members. Several students who conducted research at the College have already presented their work at professional conferences in their disciplines.

Student exhibits will be on display from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. They will cover a range of disciplines and topics, including the following:

  • Scott Azar, Sarah Barsukoff, Robert Fitzgerald, David Lustberg, Alyssa Schaller; Faculty Sponsor: Paul Bischoff (Secondary Science Education); "Water Quality Analysis of Three Creeks Leading into the Susquehanna River in Oneonta, New York and their Effects on the River's Water Quality"
  • Peggi Dudley; Faculty Sponsor: Albert Sosa (Physical Education); "Development of Trail Maps for the Oneonta Area"
  • Chun Kit Lo; Faculty Sponsor: Ho Hon Leung (Sociology); "Hong Kong Ethnic and Cultural Identities: Perspectives from Young Adults"
  • Phillip Pearson; Faculty Sponsor: Yun-Jung Choi (Human Ecology); "College Students' Online Shopping Behaviors"
  • Shayne Spencer; Faculty Sponsor: Janet Nepkie (Music); "Second Life Concert Hall: Scarlet House of Music"
SUNY-Oneonta's Student/Faculty Grant Program for Research and Creative Activity enables students to conduct in-depth research in a major area of interest under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The grants program is funded by the College at Oneonta Foundation's unrestricted endowment and administered by the College Senate Committee on Research. Student Research Day is sponsored by the College Senate Committee on Research, Grants Development Office, and College at Oneonta Foundation.
