ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Workers at the SUNY College at Oneonta who are renovating the Tobey Hall residence hall discovered a time capsule from 1958 when they were removing the building's cornerstone. The time capsule contained a number of items, primarily publications, that were chosen by SUNY Oneonta students and staff to represent the College in 1958.

College archivist Heather Heyduk compiled the following list of the capsule's contents:

• Blueprint map of Oneonta, 1951, drawn by Assistant City Engineer
• Hand drawn map of Oneonta, from Main St. to West St. to East St., which includes Old Main, Bugbee, the Heating Plant, Home Economics, Morris, Denison, Bacon, and New Dorm
• Article: "Are Small High Schools Worth Saving?" reprinted from the April 1959 issue of Farm Journal
• Catskill Area Project in Small School Design, 1959
• 1958-59 Estimated Expenses for students
• Staff Directory and Addendum, 1958-59
• "You'll Like Oneonta New York" brochure published by Chamber of Commerce and City of Oneonta
• Panda Prints Valentine's Day card
• College Publications, including the Catalog 1959-1961, Summer Session Catalog 1959, General College brochure, brochure entitled "Presenting…State University Teachers College Oneonta, New York"
• Home Economics Program brochure
• The Bell Freshman Handbook
• Student Publications, including Scope Fall-Winter 1957-58
• SUNY Publications, including two versions of "Welcome to our Campus!" "Do You Know Your State University," "Summary Bulletin 1958-59," and "State University Teachers Colleges"
• In an envelope labeled "From Margaret Baughman" (Assistant Dean of Students at the time), a Hagen-Renaker ceramic trinket.

The College's plans for the time capsule include working with current students to add new materials to it and then to put it back in Tobey Hall for future generations. That is tentatively scheduled to take place during the re-dedication of the building, which may be held in October.

Associate Vice President for Facilities Thomas Rathbone is coordinating the process of placing the capsule. College archivist Heather Heyduk is cataloging, preserving, and displaying the contents.
