ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Organizers of the World's Largest Soccer Game, scheduled for Thursday, April 17, at the SUNY College at Oneonta, have released more details of the events and the historic attempt to stage a game with over 1,000 participants. Admission to all of the events is free, and members of the community are invited to attend.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. on the lower end of campus, where participants in the game will receive shirts. A parade will then form in front of Higgins Hall, proceed up West Dorm Drive, and end at the All-College Field, the site of the game. The parade will include College President Alan B. Donovan and former Oneonta Mayor David W. Brenner, who were the goalies in the first World's Largest Soccer Game, held at SUNY-Oneonta in 1988. The parade will also include college floats and the players participating in the game. Local Oneonta bands Autumn Avenue and Against Odds will provide entertainment at the pre-game show.
With a wide range of participants including students, faculty, staff, and community members, the game will kick off at 8 p.m. with the opposing teams, each comprised of 500 players, wearing red or white shirts and trying to score with a large inflatable ball. Twelve members of the SUNY-Oneonta women's soccer team will serve as referees. The game is scheduled to consist of two 15-minute halves with a halftime show including performances by the SUNY-Oneonta Cheerleading Team, Kick-Line Team, and Terpsichorean Dance Company. Laura Morcone, goalie of the College's 2003 NCAA championship team, will take President Donovan's spot in goal this year.
The World's Largest Soccer Game is being held in honor of President
Donovan, who has announced that he plans to retire this year. Proceeds from
the event will support the newly established Alan B. Donovan Scholarship at
SUNY-Oneonta.
