Amanda Minnock
Graduation Year: 2009
Dual Major: Biology and Anthropology with a minor in Chemistry
Hometown: Goshen, NY
CAREER GOAL:
After graduate school, work in forensics or cancer research.
ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS:
Amanda has completed three independent studies with professors: “Organic Reactions” with Dr. Jacqueline Bennett and “DNA Testing” and “Cancer Biology” with Dr. Nancy Bachman. She has also received three Student/Faculty Research Grants, which formed the basis of three presentations at Student Research Day: “Almond to Mint in Two Easy Steps,” “DNA Testing Using a TaqMan Assay,” and “Forensic Chemical Analysis.”
CAMPUS ACTIVITIES:
In addition to tutoring students in the sciences, Amanda served as a counselor in the College’s PR2EPS Summer Science Camp, where she assisted campers with science activities and experiments. She was elected as lecture chair for the College Union Activities Council, President of her residence hall, and an honorary director of the College at Oneonta Foundation. She has volunteered on campus and off. Amanda is also a member of the Biology and Anthropology clubs.
WHY ONEONTA?
In Amanda’s words, “There is just something about this place. Oneonta was the first school I looked at and I knew the second I stepped onto the campus this is where I wanted to go! The size is perfect. My professors know who I am and are always willing to help. As you walk through campus it’s always a nice mix of new people and familiar faces.”
What has been your most memorable experience at Oneonta?
Student Research Day this past spring. I was presenting a project on Forensic Chemical Analysis. It’s just a great feeling to have other students and faculty interested in what you are doing and to be able to see what they have been up to. This year, an Oneonta alumna, Dr. Margie Clapper, came as the keynote speaker. She’s the Director of Chemoprevention Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Her presentation was inspiring, and I was able to talk to her one-on-one about cancer research and forensics, both of which I’m very interested in. She gave me her contact information in case I had any other questions.
What is the most influential class you have taken at Oneonta?
The most influential class I’ve taken would have to be one of my independent studies. You are able to learn one-on-one with your professor and get hands-on learning. I have learned to use a variety of scientific technologies, such as genomic DNA isolation. Many research jobs require previous experience with these technologies.
What three words summarize your experience at Oneonta?
Unforgettable. Inspiring. Fun!
What advice do you have for high school students considering Oneonta?
Get involved!! It’s a great way to meet new people and can lead to amazing opportunities!
