Libraries, Google, and Beyond: Becoming an Online Information Sleuth


This is a selective list of journal and information databases available at Milne Library.  These databases can be used by the public within the library building, but off-campus use is restricted to faculty, staff and students at SUNY Oneonta.

Library Databases: Articles from previously printed magazines, professional and scholarly journals, and newspapers

Academic Search Premier
Provides full text for selected scholarly journals and popular magazines across the disciplines.
JSTOR archive
Provides access to the full text of journals in many subject areas. There is no coverage for the last 3-5 years.
LEXIS-NEXIS
Includes full text from state, national, and international news sources, but generally without illustrations. Also provides full text from selected legal, medical, and business sources.
New York Times Archive, 1851-2003
Includes full-text of this major national newspaper.
Project Muse
Provides full text of journal articles in the social sciences and humanities.
Reader's Guide Retrospective 1890-1982
Index to popular periodicals, many of which are in Milne Library's collection.

Facts.com
Provides full text information on issues and controversies, historic events from 1940 on, current events.
GenderWatch
A full text database of journals, newsletters and research reports on women.
HarpWeek
HarpWeek is the full text, full-image electronic version of Harpers Weekly. Coverage is from 1857-1865.
Health Reference Center - Academic
Index (with abstracts) to health literature. Includes some full text.
Investext Plus
Find investment, company and industry reports from over 500 brokers. Includes information from Mergent (Moody's) manuals.
Literature Resource Center
Provides access to biographies, bibliographies and critical analysis of authors from every age and literary discipline.
Opposing Viewpoints
Contains about 2000 viewpoint articles, 1000 topic overviews, 700 court case overviews, and 30 full text periodicals and newspapers. The Research Guide provides tips on analyzing issues with opposing viewpoints, distinguishing fact from opinion, evaluating information sources, and recognizing deceptive arguments.
Oxford English Dictionary
Online version of the print dictionary which can be found at REF PE1625 .O87 1989 (19 volumes).
ValueLine
Comprehensive source of information and advice on approximately 3,500 stocks in 94 industries. This database is to be used in the Library ONLY; please ask at Reference Desk for password.

Findarticles.com
Searchable by keyword, topic, or periodical title. "5,000,000 articles not found on any other search engine."
FreeFullText.com
Provides direct links to over 7000 scholarly periodicals that make some online content available. This site is better when you already have a citation.

Finding the full text of a specific magazine:

SerialsSolutions
Alphabetical listing of the titles of over 17000 journals, magazines, and newspapers available full text to College at Oneonta patrons in 16 different databases. Search by title of the periodical.
