To Place Materials on Reserve
You must fill out a Reserve Request Form for each item you wish to have placed on reserve. Forms are available at the Circulation/Reserve Desk. All forms should be completed as fully and accurately as possible to ensure that reserve materials will be easily accessible to your students.
How Will Traditional Reserve Material be Accessed?
Reserve materials are listed in the online catalog. They are searchable by Title, Instructor's Last Name and Course Number. Please note that all reserve materials will be entered into the online catalog by TITLE. Therefore, it is essential for reserves to be listed by title in your syllabus. It is very important that both the Instructor's Last Name and the full Course Number (i.e. PSYC100, BIOL228) be listed on the form because they each provide a point of access to reserve materials in the online catalog. Reserve materials will not normally be accessible by author. Reserve materials may be listed under more than one instructor and/or under more than one course number. All pertinent information should be indicated on the Reserve Request Form.
How Will Electronic Reserve Material be Accessed?
Electronic reserve material can be accessed 24 hours/day from both on and off campus from the Milne Library web page by clicking on Reserves. Electronic reserve items are searchable by Instructor, Course Number or Department. Access to a course web page may be password protected. All passwords will be supplied to students enrolled in a course by the instructor.

What Can Be Placed on Reserve?
- Library Materials: All Milne Library materials may be placed on reserve EXCEPT materials from the Reference, Periodicals (photocopies of articles may be placed on reserve) or SCC collections. Materials owned by other libraries cannot be placed on reserve. You should locate and bring the library materials to the Circulation/Reserve Desk to expedite processing. If an item is not on the shelf, we will either recall it or initiate a search for it immediately. The item will be processed as soon as it is located. Library materials will be returned to the stacks at the end of each semester unless an instructor requests that the item be placed on long-term reserve.
- Personal Copies of Books or Journals: Faculty may place a personal copy of a book , textbook or periodical on reserve, however, the library cannot guarantee the safety of these items (either by loss or mutilation). We recommend that personal copy materials be placed in the "restricted" category which allows only a 2 hour use within the library.
- Course Syllabus, Lecture Notes, Exams: Faculty may place a copy of their course syllabus, lecture notes or exams on reserve.
Electronic Reserve Processing Guidelines
- Access to a course page will be password protected. The password will be assigned in consultation with the instructor. Passwords will be supplied to students enrolled in a course by the instructor.
- Entries on the course page will be in alphabetical order by title unless the instructor requests that they be listed otherwise.
- Items may be submitted digitally after an initial face-to-face contact to set up an electronic reserve course page.
- Copies must be in portrait style with one page of text per sheet. Page size of photocopies should be no smaller than 8½” x 11”.
- Copies can be either single or double-sided and should be as clean as possible with no black edges.
- Items placed on electronic reserve will not be duplicated in paper format.
What's All This About Copyright?
The library will normally accept one photocopy of an article or book excerpt to be placed on reserve. However, in accordance with the American Library Association model policy, the library will accept a maximum of five copies of any article or book excerpt if the amount of material and the number of copies are "reasonable" in relation to the total number of students registered for the course. Copyrighted material can be placed on reserve for one semester only without advance permission from the copyright holder. Faculty are responsible for obtaining copyright permissions for materials they wish to place on reserve. For assistance in obtaining copyright permissions, please contact Pamela Flinton (pamela.flinton@oneonta.edu), x2998.

Electronic Reserves
Electronic reserves are materials that are in a digital format (PDF files) and are made available on the library's web page. Access to electronic reserves is usually restricted to students enrolled in a specific course because of conditions and fees imposed by the copyright holder. In consultation with instructors specific passwords will be assigned to each course. All passwords will be supplied to students enrolled in a course by their instructor.
