Research Guide: Chemistry
Welcome to the Research Guide for Chemistry. Here you will find a selection of resources to help you get started. This page is organized via the tabs which designate the section of the Research Guide. Under each tab you will find resources specific to that tab. Here are some places to start when you're not sure where to begin:
Background information on a topic can often be found in encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference sources. There are encyclopedias in the reference area on the first floor of Milne Library that cover most topics. In addition, you can try the Gale Virtual Reference Library. Books often treat a topic more comprehensively than journal articles. Books can be a good place to find an overview of a topic. References to additional articles and books can often be found in a bibliography at the end of a chapter. Since journal articles are often more focused than books, they may provide more specific information than books. References to additional articles and books can often be found in a bibliography at the end of an article. Information in journal articles is usually more current than information in books. Review articles: It is often useful to begin your research with a "review article". A "review article" includes a listing of all the important research on a topic. Chemical Reviews (indexed in Chemical Abstracts and Academic Search Premier) is a good place to begin.
Databases to begin your research (more are listed under the Databases & Journals tab above)
- Library Catalog
- Use the library catalog to find books, videos, print journal titles, compact discs, reserves, and other materials. It does NOT have information about individual journal articles. The Advanced Search feature allows limiting by language, collection, document type, year.
- Academic Search Premier Oneonta only
- Academic Search Premier (a link on the Milne Library home page) is a good place to begin a search. There are many full-text articles available. Searches can be limited to only peer-reviewed (scholarly) journals. Can be searched by individual journal title, eg. Chemical Reviews.
- Chemical Abstracts: Student Edition Oneonta only
- Available through FirstSearch. Provides indexing and abstracts for over 250 core chemistry journals. The search can be limited to print journals available in Milne Library. Covers from 1967 to the present. 2 simultaneous users: please be sure to log out when you are finished!
- Searchable by CAS registry number--the Sigma-Aldrich catalog can be used to find CAS registry numbers.
- ScienceDirect Oneonta only
- Provides full-text access to scholarly articles.
