ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TO RETURN TO TEACHING
Steven Garner, who has served as Director of Athletics,
Recreation and Intramurals at the College since 1994, has been granted a
leave from the College through January 17, 2007. At the conclusion of
his leave, he plans to return to his tenured position as an assistant
professor in the Physical Education Department. During Garner's time as
athletic director, the College made enormous improvements to its
athletic facilities, including the addition of the Alumni Field House,
new tennis courts, a new soccer field, a new all-weather track and
field, and a new softball field and several practice fields. Barton Ingersoll, Associate Vice President for Student Development, will assume
primary responsibility for athletics, intramurals, and recreation while
the search for a new director is underway. Senior Associate Athletics
Director Tracey Ranieri and Assistant Athletic Directors Geoff Hassard
and Tom Benoit will assume additional responsibilities during the
transition.

CONFERENCE ON JOHN BURROUGHS THIS WEEK - SOME EVENTS TODAY
The College is hosting a conference entitled "Sharp
Eyes IV: Writing the Land: John Burroughs and His Legacy" this week from
Monday, June 5 through Friday, June 9. The fourth in the series of
summer conferences on Burroughs that the College has offered, "Sharp
Eyes IV" will focus on the popular nature writer, his influence, and
current Burroughs scholarship. An authors' roundtable on "Writing About
Burroughs" featuring biographer Edward Renehan, Professor James Perrin
Warren of Washington and Lee University, and Professor Jeff Walker of
Vassar College is scheduled for today, Wednesday, June 7 at 1:30
p.m. in
the Morris Conference Center; and a presentation entitled "Protecting
Burroughs Country - The Catskills Today: Development Pressure, Wilderness,
and Drinking Water for Millions" by Tom Alworth, Executive Director of
the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, will take place at
2:30 p.m. today, also in the Morris Conference Center. Other presenters
include Roger Hecht of the SUNY-Oneonta English Department, who will
speak on "Burroughs Country and the Anti-Rent Wars." The conference will
feature presentations by noted scholars and environmentalists as well as
field trips to Burroughs' Woodchuck Lodge in Roxbury and a hike to the
Burroughs Memorial in the Catskills. The conference is intended for
scholars, writers, environmentalists, and anyone with an interest in the
work of Burroughs and other nature writers. The College will also offer
a seminar for students in conjunction with the conference for college

MUNCHKIN ALL-SPORT CAMP - JULY 31 - AUGUST 3
The Oneonta State Women’s Soccer Team will present the
10th Annual Eastman Associates Munchkin All-Sport Camp on campus, from
Monday - Thursday, July 31 - August 3, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. daily. This
camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 - 12 years. All proceeds benefit
the women’s soccer program. Tracey & David Ranieri, who head the women’s
soccer program and who have administered and coached area soccer camps
for over 20 years, will direct the camp. Each participant receives a tee
shirt donated by Domino’s Pizza and The Oneonta Shirt Company and a
water bottle donated by Wachovia Securities. Eastman Associates of
Oneonta will provide major sponsorship and the College is providing the
facilities. Cost is $60.00 per camper. Soccer, tennis, basketball,
kickball, racquetball, t-ball, track and badminton are emphasized. For

3rd Annual "Best Practices In Teaching And
Counseling" Conference
Hunt Union. Geared toward education
undergraduates, graduates, and instructors in elementary, secondary, and
school counseling programs as well as practicing teachers and counselors
and interested others. Workshops include topics related to best teaching
and counseling practices across content areas. Co-sponsored by
SUNY-Oneonta, Division of Education, Alumni Association, Catskill Area
Teacher Center, and New York State English Council.
3rd Annual Celebration Of Teaching.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to two faculty members from the SUNY College at Oneonta
on being promoted to the rank of SUNY Distinguished Professor, the
highest faculty rank in SUNY. Peter A. Di Nardo, Psychology was promoted
to SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Gretchen S. Sorin,
Director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program in History Museum Studies,
was promoted to Distinguished Service Professor. Dr. Di Nardo is a
recipient of both the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching
and the College's Susan Sutton Smith Prize for Academic Excellence. An
alumna of theCooperstown Graduate Program, Gretchen Sorin returned to SUNY-Oneonta to
direct the program in 1994. She was honored with the SUNY Chancellor's
Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2002 and
selected as a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Research Recognition
Award in 2005. With the promotions of Di Nardo and Sorin, twelve
SUNY-Oneonta faculty members have now been designated as Distinguished
Teaching Professors and three as Distinguished Service Professors.
Candidates for SUNY Distinguished Professorships are nominated by the
students and faculty of their local campus, evaluated by a SUNY advisory
committee, and recommended to the SUNY Chancellor, who presents the
finalists to the Board of Trustees for approval. The rank of
Distinguished Professor, the highest in SUNY, is conferred only to
faculty members who demonstrate outstanding abilities in their teaching
or service.
Congratulations to the five history students in William Simons history class, who are participating in a panel discussion at the 18th annual Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum on Friday, June 9. With Dr. Simons and Nancy Cannon of the College's Milne Library serving as moderators, the students will take part in a session entitled "Students and Scholars--A Baseball Dialogue" at 12:40 p.m. The students conducted research in Simons' course last semester, during which they investigated baseball as a microcosm of society with the guidance of Cannon, who is the Electronic Resources Coordinator at Milne Library. During the symposium, they will discuss their findings with prominent scholars of baseball. The students are scheduled to speak on the following topics: Dan O'Brien--The significance of Bobby Thompson's home run, "the shot heard round the world," during the era of the Korean War, Truman's presidency, and the red scare; Kevin Clough--Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb as American protagonists in the Progressive Era; Elizabeth Wolotira--Baseball as a mechanism of the Americanization of Jewish immigrants and their children; Tom Yushak--Ebbets Field as a reflection of the changes in business, politics, and sports in New York City; and Joseph Ryder--The Black Sox scandal of 1919 and the significance of the year as a transition in American history. Dr. Simons has presented at the Cooperstown symposium several times, and he has participated in all 17 previous symposia. He has served as the editor of collections of essays from the symposia entitled "The Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture," four of which have been published by McFarland and Company Publishers. During the symposium, papers will be presented by a wide range of scholars from colleges and universities across the country. Co-sponsored by the SUNY College at Oneonta and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the symposium examines the impact of baseball on American culture from multi-disciplinary perspectives. The Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, starts today, Wednesday, June 7 and will run through Friday, June 9.
