Robert W. Compton, Jr., Political Science, advised and mentored 15 selected SUNY-Oneonta students for the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York City, April 11-15, 2006. Over 3400 students from all over the world gathered at the largest National Model United Nations conference in this country. Oneonta delegates represented the Republic of Zimbabwe in UN and Associated Committees and worked to gain a better understanding of global problems and their solutions all the wile developing an appreciation for the strengths and limitations of the United Nations. Students also learned about Zimbabwe's domestic and international issues and crated their oral and written diplomatic overtures and debates in this contextual framework.
Geoffrey O'Shea, Psychology, presented a poster on April 9, 2006 at the annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society in San Francisco. The poster presented Dr. O'Shea's findings that "perceptual chunking increases awareness for repeated digit strings presented incidentally." This research was a follow-up to an article written by O'Shea entitled "Stimulus and response chunking in the Hebb digits task", which appeared in the May 2006 issue of the reference journal "Psychological Research" (Vol. 70, No. #, pp. 180-192). In this article, O'Shea discusses his findings regarding George Miller's seminal paper on chunking written in 1956. Miller identified chunking a s a cognitive strategy by which short-term memory capacity can be increased by combining the units of to-be-remembered information into higher-order groups or chunks. O'Shea's research indicated that a greater degree of learning occurred when chunking occurs perceptually rather than through responding.
