BIOLOGICAL FIELD STATION WORKS TO CONTROL WATER CHESTNUTS
Water chestnuts, a noxious aggressive aquatic plant, have invaded the Oneonta wetlands draining into the Susquehanna River near the junction of Route 205 and I-88. The movement of these plants downstream could cause serious ecological and economic impacts as far as the Chesapeake Bay. Efforts to control the threat are being coordinated through the Biological Field Station of the College. Field Station interns and students, under the direction of graduate student
Willow Eyres, will monitor the effectiveness of the controls and impacts on non-targeted plants and water quality. The New York Power Authority will fund the first year of the monitoring program by providing $5,000. The water chestnut was recently identified as a threat to the Susquehanna watershed by New York Department of Environmental Conservation wetlands biologist
Bill Sharick. With expedited permits issued by the DEC, Allied Environmental Services will be applying minimal amounts necessary of the herbicide 2-4D to reduce the population of water chestnuts to a lower level so that volunteers, organized in part by the Otsego County Conservation Association, can physically eradicate the plant. The application started on Wednesday, July 26. Funding for the effort will be provided by
Millennium Pipeline Company, LLC, a proposed 180-mile underground natural gas pipeline in New York State, through a $5,000 donation. The local Water Quality Control Committee committed $1,000 in supplemental funds for additional application and logistical expenses. Directed
Bill Harman, the SUNY-Oneonta Biological Field Station in Cooperstown is highly involved in management of the Upper Susquehanna watershed. More information about the project is available from
Dr. Harman at (607) 547-8788.

Congratulations to the College on being awarded a grant of $16,000 to ESCORT, the migrant education and support program from The Corporation for National and Community Service. The grant will be used to continue to operate an AmeriCorps program targeted towards children of migrant workers. The ESCORT AmeriCorps program provides education programs for the children of migrant farm workers and families. ESCORT selects AmeriCorps members who are themselves former migrant children who are now attending college. The AmeriCorps members earn education awards of $1,000 or more by working with younger migrant peers in summer migrant education programs, high school equivalency programs, and college assistance migrant programs. Last year, 157 members served in 23 programs across the country. The grant will enable ESCORT to expand the program to 200 AmeriCorps members serving 40 migrant-related programs around the country. They will teach migrant students through individual mentoring, tutoring, group lessons, and extracurricular activities. Members will also organize outreach projects, such as clothing drives or food deliveries, to benefit the farm worker community. ESCORT provides technical and coordination assistance as well as conferences, workshops, presentations and consultation on issues related to educational, health, and other services to children of migrant farm workers. Phil Kellerman serves as director of the ESCORT AmeriCorps program.
