ATTENTION: WORK STUDY-TEACHING ASSISTANT SUPERVISORS?
Please do not send your work study/teaching assistants to the Instruction Support Center the first two weeks of classes for training unless you can accompany them to do initial training and sign out processes. The ISC is so busy during the first two weeks with little or no student trained staffing, that it is impossible to find the time to train students. It would also help if you would phone ahead for student training in the following weeks. Remember that those students assigned to your department that will be doing classroom work for you in the Instructional Support Center this semester, must have their names on file in the ISC. Please send an email to Mona Hughes at hughesml@oneonta.edu listing your student’s names, department, and titles. Students not on file in the ISC will not be allowed to do work in the center. Please remember that students are not allowed to handle any part of exams, quizzes, or test forms, and will not be allowed to violate copyright laws. If you have any questions, please phone x2490, or send a note to the above email address.
POSTING ON IRC BULLETIN BOARDS
The IRC Staff is continually working to keep lobby bulletin boards in order. Anyone who wishes to post announcements in the IRC will need to bring their items to the IRC Main Office, Room 104. If no one is in the office when you arrive, please leave your items in the holder on the office door with a name and contact number. Your items will be posted within a short time of receiving them. Staff will remove outdated notices and post new announcements daily. Thank you for your cooperation.

GRAPHIC DESIGN SERVICES AVAILABLE

print projects such as brochures, posters, CD covers, etc. The design
project will become part of the student’s coursework and will be
overseen by the instructor. The student will produce designs for your

ONEONTA ID NUMBER POLICY
In response to a New York State law enacted in 2000, all students are
assigned an Oneonta ID number or A00 number. These numbers are used as a
unique student identifier. They are printed on class rosters and are
used by students when asking for services at the College. According to
FERPA and campus policy, these numbers are to be treated in the same
manner as the social security number. Please take care to provide the
maximum security for all student record information. It is incumbent on
all of us to protect our students’ privacy. If you would like a
refresher on FERPA or if you have any questions regarding privacy of
student records, please contact Bill Grau, College Registrar at ext.
3216 or graufw@oneonta.edu.
REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or
identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name
or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any
part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever
you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before
assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical
listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave
students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must
be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no
circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part
thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in
termination of Federal funding to the college. Questions regarding the
privacy of student records should be directed to Bill Grau, College
Registrar at x3216 or via e-mail at graufw@oneonta.edu.

Julie McGowan, Admissions Office
Congratulations to the College on reaching the top tier in the 2007 rankings of colleges and universities released recently by U.S. News and World Report. President Alan B. Donovan credited the College's rise in the rankings to campus-wide efforts to improve the quality of students' experiences at the College. "We're pleased that the rankings have begun to recognize what we've known for quite some time: Thanks to the efforts of the entire College community, we've emerged as a highly selective college that offers outstanding educational experiences for our students." The achievement reflects impressive gains by the College. SUNY-Oneonta has been ranked in the third tier of "universities master's--northern" since the 2003 U.S. News rankings. In the intervening years, the College continued its progress in a number of key areas, while remaining in the third tier overall. Reflecting the College's increasing selectivity in admissions, the College's acceptance rate for its freshman class is now at 43%. The College received 11,440 applications for freshman admission this year. Both the number of applications and the selectivity are the College's highest in the past 30 years. This is the first time that SUNY-Oneonta has appeared in the top tier since the U.S. News rankings began in 1983.
Rob Compton, Political Science, was named to the Center for International Development’s Advisory Board. Also during Spring and Summer 2006 he was Academic Mentor to Henry Ndlovu, Clerk of Committees of the Zimbabwe National Parliament and Second Legislative Fellow with the Center for International Development (CID-SUNY). The State University of New York’s Center for International Development is a university-wide institution that designs and implements international technical assistance and training projects, conducts policy-oriented research, and contributes to both the theory and the practice of international development. Through its in-country development projects, and its conferences, publications, research, and outreach activities, the Center works to enhance the capacity of developing nations to meet critical challenges.
James Ebert, Earth Sciences, and Steven Kluge, Fox Lane High School, received a grant from the Digital Water Education Library (DWEL) and the Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) to develop virtual tours of the landscape regions of New York using Google Earth. The grant funded 15 high school teachers from across the state in developing tours of their local landscape regions. The grant also supported a workshop at SUNY-Oneonta in July to edit and compile the tours. Among the participants were the following Oneonta alumni: Bob Mozer (MA – Earth Science, 1983), Zachary Miller (Geology, Water Resources, 2001) and Robert DeMarco (AEES, 2005). The Google Earth tours have been reviewed by DLESE ( http://www.dlese.org) and have been accessioned as a part of the New York State Instructional Collection, which was also developed under the direction of Dr. Ebert and Mr. Kluge.
Nithya Iyer, Educational Psychology and Counseling, presented a paper titled “Dispositions and Perceived Preparedness of Teacher Candidates in Traditional Undergraduate Teacher Education, Master’s with Licensure, and Alternative Licensure Program” at 2006 AERA Annual meeting in San Francisco, CA on April 10th. Her paper investigates the possible differences and shortcomings of the three different ways to prepare new teachers in terms of dispositions and perceived preparedness. In addition, this research investigates whether teachers in alternative licensure programs have the dispositions and perceived preparation essential for teaching. It also examines each program to identify predictors of preparation and dispositions for teaching.
Brian M. Lowe, Sociology, presented his paper “Towards a Theory of Moralization” in the Regular Session on Symbolic Interaction titled “Symbolic Interaction: The Many Faces of Culture” at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association held in Montreal, Quebec on 11 August 2006. “Towards a Theory of Moralization” offered a critique of previous sociological examinations of moral panics and argued for a more sustained and engaged sociological examination of how practices, phenomena, and groups may acquire, or are bestowed, moral qualities that they did not previously hold. The panel was comprised of presenters from Indiana University, the University of Chicago, and Boise State University.
William Simons, History, served as managing director of the Eighteenth Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture. The conference was jointly sponsored by SUNY Oneonta and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Symposium was held on June 7-9, 2006, at the Hall of Fame. Approximately fifty scholars presented papers, and 140 individuals attended the proceedings.
