OVER $9 MILLION RAISED IN CAMPAIGN
The Office of College Advancement has compiled a report
detailing the total giving, endowment growth, and scholarship growth
from the start of the College’s comprehensive Campaign, Changing Lives
Since 1889. The Campaign’s goal is to raise $10 million by June 2007,
which will fund scholarships, science programs, the Milne Library
endowment, and unrestricted endowment. To date, we have raised
$9,171,615. During the Campaign, the College at Oneonta’s endowment has
grown from $17.1 million to $27 million, an increase of 58%. In
addition, we are very pleased to report that for the 2006-2007 academic
year, we will award over 700 scholarships and a total of over $1.25
million to our Oneonta students. This represents a 52% increase over the
last five years. A copy of the report is
attached to this issue of the Bulletin.

UUP CONTRACT: CALL FOR PROPOSALS
UUP is in the first stages of preparing for contract negotiations. The
current contract will expire on June 30, 2007. The contract to be
negotiated will set terms and conditions of employment for a four year
period. Contract negotiations will take place between UUP and the State
of New York. A single contract will encompass all UUP/SUNY campuses. UUP
seeks ideas and suggestions from its members for the contract to be
negotiated. The statewide UUP leadership will send a survey to all
members of the bargaining unit to gather such information. In addition
to the survey from the statewide UUP organization, the Oneonta UUP
encourages its members to e-mail chapter president Bill Simons at
SimonsWM@Oneonta.Edu with proposals and priorities for the new contract.
Bill will serve on the Negotiations Committee. E-mail proposals to Bill
should be specific, detailed, and offer a rationale, theoretical and/or
experiential, for items advocated. Also provide your name and contact
information along with the proposal. If you ask for your name to be
withheld, that request will be honored. On other UUP/SUNY campuses
similar canvassing of members is taking place. The level of support and
practicality of proposals will receive careful consideration. Rob
Compton, UUP Oneonta vice president for academics, and Janie Forrest-Glotzer,
chapter facilitator for professionals, will serve on the statewide Ad
Hoc Advisory Committee for contract negations. Rob and Janie also invite
members of the UUP Oneonta bargaining unit to send them, by e-mail,
proposals concerning the new contract. Rob’s e-mail address is
comptorw@oneonta.edu
Janie’s e-mail address is forresjl@oneonta.edu.
Proposals for the new
contract must be received by Bill, Rob, and/or Janie, by e-mail, no
later than Friday, October 6.

PAIRS PRESENTS “SEX SIGNALS” - SEPTEMBER 27
The PAIRS committee will present the program Sex Signals on
Wednesday,
September 27 in the Hunt Union Ballroom at 8:00 p.m. Sex Signals provokes
discussions about dating, sex, and the issue of consent. Through a
no-holds-barred approach, the show explores how social pressures, gender
role stereotypes, and unrealistic fantasies can make social interaction
a challenge. Worse still, these factors enable some to view date rape as
simple seduction, and for victims of date rape to blame themselves for
their own vulnerability. Although the message is a serious one, the show
uses humor, engaging audiences in candid discussions about their beliefs
and experiences. Seasoned educators and facilitators, the presenters
strike a balance between laughing about the differences between men and
women, and clearly communicating some serious messages about how we all
should treat each other. For more information contact Rebecca Harrington
at x3540 or harrinrl@oneonta.edu

Congratulations to the Ring/Ackerman/Zane drag racing team who has had

the College, with an engine built and tuned by Al Ackerman of Saddle
Brook, NJ, has been driven by Lee Zane of Perry Hall, MD to a win at the
O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals in Memphis, TN in August, a runner-up at
the U.S. Mac Tools Nationals in Indianapolis, IN over the Labor Day
weekend, and yet another win at the Division One Lucas Oil Drag Racing

FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
Richard P. Barberio, Political Science, and Brian M. Lowe, Sociology, recently presented a paper, entitled “Branding: Presidential Politics and Crafted Political Communications,” to the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association (APSA). The meeting of APSA, the largest organization of political scientists in the world, featured over seven thousand participants and was held at the Marriott, Loews Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, in Philadelphia, PA, August 30th to September 2nd, 2006. Professor Barberio and Professor Lowe presented findings from research funded by a faculty development grant from the College. Their findings, presented as a part of an APSA panel entitled "Getting the Word Out: Presidential Communication Strategies," indicate that like branded consumer products, branded presidential policy initiatives are designed to sell the initiative while, at the same time, preventing opposition from forming in the traditional model of bargaining in a pluralistic political system. The analysis of the rhetoric used by Bill Clinton and George W. Bush in support of their favored initiatives suggests that branding is a strategy that has become a plausible means of persuasion due to transformations within the economy and culture that emphasize the importance of appearance, image, and rhetorical content over more substantive measures.
Veronica Diver, International Education, graduated with distinction from Mercy College in May 2006. She received a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership. Her final research project, a compilation of research and papers written during the course of her studies, focused on issues in international education. The first chapter of this project has been used as a writing sample for graduate students at Mercy College.
Ashok Malhotra, Philosophy, was invited by the Ninash Foundation chapter of Holland to visit Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht on July 2-4 and July10-14, 2006. He gave two radio interviews on Yoga and Meditation as well as the Ninash Foundation’s work on spreading literacy among the poorest of poor children in India. He appeared on Radio AMOR in Rotterdam and was interviewed by Kries Bandhoe and Mani Gogar. His talk was heard by more than a quarter of a million subscribers of India origin. In Rotterdam, he also gave a seminar on “Compassionate Service” performed by the SUNY Oneonta Students during their “Learn and Serve in India” study abroad program (1996-2004) in collaboration with the Ninash Foundation, which materialized into building four Indo-International Schools for the underprivileged children of India. Dr. Malhotra also held discussions with Hans Rappard, President of the Holland East West Foundation regarding cooperation between East West Center, University of Hawaii, and his East West Foundation by introducing Hindu and Islamic studies. Hans Rappard also expressed the desire to establish cooperation with the Yoga and Meditation Society of SUNY Oneonta by inviting Malhotra to be the keynote speaker in their future program.
William Simons, History, has been selected to serve on United University Professions statewide Negotiations Committee. The Negotiations Committee will make recommendations to the Negotiations Team concerning the contract to be negotiated between the State of New York and United University Professions.
