Congratulations to Patti Hanley, the College Migrant Assistance Program staff, Kim Muller and the Research Foundation staff on the announcement that the program's grant application was among the top-ranked applications and has been selected for continued funding. The CAMP grant is a non-competing continuation award for a five-year project period. First year funding is $393,000.
P. Jay Fleisher, Earth Sciences, organized and led a 16-day field excursion to Newfoundland, Canada in conjunction with Gary Holway, Emeritus, Biology, for a community group in August 2006. A total of 22 Adult Learners, mainly from central New York State, toured with Jay and Gary to some of Newfoundland’s most scenic locations on what may best be described as an "informed holiday". Considerable attention was directed to Newfoundland's unique geologic history, wildlife, ecosystems, paleo archaeology, cultural diversity, and historic events spanning occupation by Beothuk Indians, Viking domination, and the clashes between British and French claims of possession for fishing rights.
Matthew Hendley, History, recently presented a paper at the 56th annual meeting of the New York State Association of European Historians at Hartwick College, Oneonta, New York. On September 16, 2006 Dr. Hendley presented a paper entitled “Culture in Conflict: Shakespeare as a Cultural Symbol in Britain during the First World War”. His paper examined how the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, which occurred in 1916, led to three major conflicts over the meaning of Shakespeare as a cultural symbol. First, Shakespeare was presented as an international symbol for all humanity while at others he was re-packaged by some British cultural critics as the epitome of Englishness. The second conflict involved Germany, Britain’s main wartime opponent. Germany also had a long-standing claim to Shakespeare, which they were determined to hold onto during the war. During the nineteenth century, Germany hailed Shakespeare as a vital inspiration for German poetry and drama. Dr. Hendley’s paper argued that the competing claims between Britain and Germany to Shakespeare’s true heritage echoed their other wartime propaganda denunciations of each other. Finally, Dr. Hendley’s paper also examined how the British also used the Tercentenary to encourage American interest in Shakespeare as part of their diplomatic and propaganda efforts to increase international support for the British war effort. Dr. Hendley concluded by noting that the official organizers of the Shakespeare Tercentenary celebrations were unable to define Shakespeare conclusively as a cultural symbol and that the pressures of war led to a constant contestation over the true meaning of Shakespeare.
