RENEE WALKER WINS SIEGFRIED PRIZE
Congratulations to Renee Walker, Assistant Professor of
Anthropology, on being awarded the 2006 Richard Siegfried Junior Faculty
Prize for Academic Excellence. Dr. Walker will deliver the annual
Siegfried Lecture, an address entitled “Dogs of New York: The Role of
Dogs in Human Culture,” based on her ongoing research on how dogs have
played a significant role in the lives of humans for approximately
14,000 years. Dr. Walker’s talk will focus, in part, on the role of dogs
in the lives of ancient peoples of New York and how the relationship
between dogs and humans has not changed very much over the years. The
lecture is scheduled for Thursday, November 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the
Craven
Lounge of the Morris Conference Center. A dessert reception precedes the
lecture at 7:00 p.m.. As in years past, both the reception and the lecture
are free and open to the public. The Richard Siegfried Junior Faculty
Prize for Academic Excellence is awarded annually to a non-tenured
faculty member to recognize outstanding faculty achievement outside the
classroom. Thirty-seven students also will be recognized for attaining a
3.9 or higher GPA in their first year as a full time freshman or
transfer student at Oneonta. This event and the student awards presented
are made possible by the generous gifts of College at Oneonta Alumni to
the 2006-2007 Alumni Annual Fund. Special acknowledgment is given to
Mrs. Alice Siegfried who has made a gift to the College at Oneonta
Foundation to fund the Richard Siegfried Junior Faculty Prize.

NEW EMAIL ADDRESS ACTIVATED FOR ALUMNI UPDATES
The Office of Alumni Affairs has initiated an efficient way for faculty
and staff to communicate Alumni updates (changes of address, phone,
marriage or employment news.) Faculty and staff can share these updates
by e-mailing them to alumniupdate@oneonta.edu. In an on-going effort to
maintain current Alumni information, the Alumni database is updated
through a National Change of Address (NCOA) process 4 times per year
before each issue of Reflections mails. This has greatly improved our
ability to keep alumni in touch with what’s going on at the College. We
realize that alumni often communicate with their academic departments
providing information that we might not already have recorded so please
share alumni updates with us whenever you can. For information to be
used for accreditation, assessment surveys or other official College
business you may obtain a Database Information Request Form from the
Office of Alumni Affairs at x2526. Names, addresses and phone numbers
cannot be provided for unauthorized fundraising or private use.
RETURN VIDEO TAPES TO IRC
Anyone who has checked a videotape out of the IRC tape library should
return those tapes to IRC ASAP. Please check offices and other areas for

THANK YOU
I’d like to thank my friends at SUNY Oneonta for your cards, kind words
of sympathy, and support during the recent loss of my father. A special
thank you to the people in Residential Community Life, Netzer
Administration, and FYE for the collection you gave me. Thank you to
SUNY Shine for the contribution made to the Catskill Area Hospice
Foundation in memory of my father. It’s people like you who care that
helps me get through this difficult time. Thank you for support.
Donna
Mott, Residence Life & Housing
Dear Human Ecology Friends and Colleagues: Thank you so much for
arranging such a lovely retirement send off for me yesterday. Though it
was difficult, it was great to have the chance to say adios to so many
of the folks I have gotten to know over the last 25 years. The
decorations were fun and the food was grand! Oscar, OC, Jen, Mary Ann
and....well everyone - you out did yourselves. Your caring is just one
more reason why it is so hard to go. You shouldn't have given me a gift
too on top of everything else, but if you could not be dissuaded, the
Oneonta State bag was the perfect choice. It is gorgeous, wonderful, and
did someone say "practical"? I didn't even know that there was such a
thing available. I will remember you kindly every time I enjoy it -
which will be often. As Armand and I leave Oneonta on November 28th to
drive west, we wish one and all the best always. I came here because the
faculty were such a supportive and caring team and I leave with that
spirit very much alive and well. It will take you far - both
individually and collectively. God bless and be sure to look us up when
you come West. As of December 1, our address will be: 9423 N. Dancing
Gecko Place Tucson, AZ 85743. Until we get a new phone number, you can
reach us via cell at 607 435 0697. All the best today and always.
With much affection, Carolyn Haessig
Many thanks to SUNY-Shine for the generous donation in my father's name
to the Murrysville Volunteer Fire Department. My father was a life
member of the organization and at 86 still attended meetings and
participated in fund raising. If you ever have the opportunity to see
the volunteer fire department ceremony on the death of a member, the
final alarm is a magnificent tribute.
Joan H. Marshall, Ed. Psych. &
Counseling
Thank you to all faculty and staff who attended and encouraged students
to attend the Graduate and Professional School Fair on October 30, 2006.
It was a big success! There were well over 400 students in attendance.
Your support helps to make this one of the most successful graduate
fairs in SUNY!
Kristy Davidson, Career Development
We would like to thank the campus community for all their kind words and
generosity following the birth of our son, Marshall Robert Mahar, born
on October 19, 2006. We would also like to thank SUNY-Shine for their
thoughtful gift. Thank you again!
Daniel & Jennifer Mahar, Admissions &
Recruitment
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the SUNY-Oneonta Inter-Greek Council and to the 18 faculty members who were recognized by the organization at the annual Faculty Recognition Reception. Faculty members were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the lives of their students. Each fraternity and sorority were asked to nominate two faculty members whom they feel have an exceptional impact on students lives. The Inter-Greek Council organized the reception, held in the Hunt Union Ballroom. The reception began with a brief welcome address from Inter-Greek Council President, Junait Shah. Shah says that, “all of the faulty honored today are being recognized for being exemplarily teachers, mentors, and role models.” To personalize the ceremony, after each faculty member was recognized, a short anecdote or words of praise from the nominating chapter was read. Each faculty member recognized also received a framed certificate. Recognition went to the following: Jon Arakaki, Lynda Bassette, Brian Bietzel, Dale Capristo, Susan Bernardin, Paul Carter, Peter DiNardo, Ben Dixon, Donna Miranda, April Harper, Frank O’Mara, Mine Ozer, Christine Quail, Francis Rodriguez, Caridad Souza-Watkins, Gary Turits, Loraine Tyler, and Jeremy Wall. For additional information about the Oneonta Inter-Greek Council Faculty Recognition Reception, contact Angie Eichler, Associate Director for Campus Life at SUNY-Oneonta, at x3591.
FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
Margaret Golden, Elementary Education, presented a workshop entitled Hands-On Fractions at the 56th annual conference of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). This conference was held in Saratoga, New York from October 26 through October 28. Margaret's workshop showed elementary teachers how they could help students visualize addition, subtraction and division of fractions.
Thomas D. Beal, History, presented “Lost Between Fact and Fiction: An Examination of Race, Slavery and Publishing in Early New York City” at the Fourth International Conference on the Book (Boston, MA), in October 2006. The paper and multi-media presentation provided a detailed examination of trial pamphlets published in 1819. It compared what newspaper editors, writers and printers published about the life, criminal past and public execution of the African American servant Rose Butler to diaries, letters, and other manuscripts found in the New-York Historical Society (New York, NY). The paper demonstrated that printers published a radically altered –and racially charged– version of Butler’s past and trial. The presentation used these changes as a means to demonstrate how the issues of race and the 1799 gradual emancipation act (which helped bring an end to slavery in New York State) informed what the printers changed and the story (part fact and part fiction) that they told and sold. Recovering Butler’s story, exploring this line between fact and fiction, sheds light on the history of racial tension and publishing in early New York. The research for this paper was funded by a 2005-2006 Faculty Research Grant and the presentation was funded by a Faculty Development Fund (AY 2006-2007) Grant.
