Chamber Choir from Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, Russia, through Tuesday,
December 5. During the choir's visit to Oneonta, they will perform with
the Catskill Choral Society in its December presentation as well as in
concerts at several other venues including the Jordanville monastery,
Hampshire House, City of Oneonta Christmas Tree Lighting, and the
College. President Alan B. Donovan and Kim Muller, invited the choir to
visit Oneonta when they visited Krasnoyarsk in 2004. The choir's visit
is part of the College's on-going relationship with institutions of
higher education in Krasnoyarsk. The Tebe Poem Chamber Choir was founded
in 1991 by Konstantin Jakobson, Rector of the Krasnoyarsk State Academy
of Music and Theater and Honored Artist of Russia. The choir is made up
entirely of professional singers, many of whom are soloists with the
Academy's opera and ballet companies or its musical Comedy One troupe.
The professional quality of the vocalists allows the ensemble to
traverse a wide range of musical idioms and approaches from intimate a
cappella works to large-scale cantatas and oratorios. The primary focus
of the ensemble is the rich repertory of traditional Russian sacred
music, such as the works by Chesnokov and Rachmaninov, as well as the
growing repertory of contemporary Russian sacred music, such as that by
Kisselev and Zubitsky. The choir also embraces the rich legacy of
Russian folk music by composers such as Shostakovich as well as jazz and
popular-styled choral works. Tebe Poem has appeared in a number of music
festivals in Russia as well as in France, Switzerland, Holland, the
former Yugoslavia, and Argentina. The choir has won several awards,
including prizes at the International Choir Competition in Montreux
(Switzerland) and the International Competition in Trelew (Argentina).
Their success at these and other venues has led to several recording
projects, including the "Chesnokov Liturgy" of St. John Chrysostoms. The
Catskill Choral Society, in concert with Tebe Poem, a renowned Russian
Chamber Choir, presents An Evening of Choral Music, featuring Carl
Orff's Catulli Carmina, Russian sacred music and folklore, and the
premier performance of in two places in two pieces by Thomas Licata.

Congratulations to the College at Oneonta chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honor society for college freshmen, inducted 97 new members at a ceremony on October 22 in the Hunt College Union Ballroom on campus. With over 260 chapters nationwide, Phi Eta Sigma promotes excellence through recognition programs and scholarship competitions. New members qualify by achieving grade-point averages of at least 3.5 during their first semester or year in college. Phi Eta Sigma, one of the longest-standing freshman honor societies in the country, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Chartered in 1994, the chapter at the College at Oneonta is advised by Dean of Science and Social Science Michael P. Merilan. A liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus, the SUNY College at Oneonta features outstanding and accessible faculty, students committed to academics and community service, exceptional technology, a modern fieldhouse and athletic facilities, and a beautiful campus. FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
Sunil Labroo, Physics & Astronomy, was recently in Washington D.C. to review applications for the 2007 Fulbright awards to South Asia, Middle East, and North Africa region. He was invited by the Center for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to serve a three year term on the Fulbright Review Committee starting in 2005. CIES administers the non-student Fulbright awards throughout the world. Dr. Labroo received a Fulbright Lecturing grant in 2004 to teach physics and engineering courses at the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India. The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by former Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. It is sponsored by the State Department of the United States Government. It’s goal is to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries...” With this goal, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 250,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study and teach in each other’s countries, exchange ideas, and develop joint solutions to address shared concerns. Currently, the Program operates in 140 countries, including 51 countries with bi-national Fulbright Commissions and Foundations.
Orlando Legname, Music, had a composition selected for performance at the Society of Composers conference at Hamilton College. His electronic music group Atom 3 with faculty member Joe Pignato, Music, and former faculty member Paul Geluso, performed the composition Schizotronic at Hamilton College on November 10, 2006.
Monisha Kamala Mahanta, Physics and Astronomy, presented a paper titled “Laguerre Gaussian beams for quantum communication” on her research related to Quantum Information Processes at the IEEE Upstate NY workshop on Communications and Networking on November 6, 2006. The research was carried out at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome, NY with the two year long (2004-2006) senior research fellowship Dr. Mahanta was awarded by the National Academy of the Sciences/National Research Council. Earlier this year, she presented the first paper titled “Experimentation on Laguerre-Gaussian laser beams for QI application” on her fellowship research at the 2006 IEEE international nano-conference held at Singapore in January, 2006. She is now preparing to present a third paper titled “SLM and fiber-optic experimentation on Laguerre Gaussian beams for QI application” on the research at the QCMC-2006, the 8th international conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computation to be held at Tokyo, Japan on November 28 - December 3, 2006.
Emily Phillips, Educational Psychology and Counseling, is author of an expert opinion in The America Counseling Association's new book, Critical incidents in counseling children regarding the use of play techniques with children.
