SEEKING QUALIFIED TUTORS
As always, The Center for Academic Development and
Enrichment (CADE) office is seeking faculty recommendations for
qualified tutors for 100- and 200-level courses for the Spring semester.
Tutors are paid for their time, and tutorial experience looks great on a
resume. CADE is asking instructors to please take a few minutes to look
over your class lists and either complete the form sent to you in the
mail or e-mail Mary Dorn ( dornmb@oneonta.edu) with any recommendations
you have for new tutors. Your recommendations will help CADE to provide
tutors who can effectively assist students with your class material.
CADE is here to support you in your endeavor to lead your students to
success. Happy Holidays!!!

COMPUTER SERVICES/OPERATIONS REPORT DISTRIBUTION PROCEDURES
The Computer Services/Operations Department makes every effort to
maintain the integrity and security of SUNY Oneonta’s data. An aspect of
that charge has been identified as an area in need of improvement.
Current procedures regarding the distribution of printed materials (i.e.
reports, labels, etc.) have often left these materials in a
less-than-secure area of our department during normal business hours. In
our continuing effort to maintain data security, the department has
developed new procedures for the dissemination of printed materials.
Departments expecting to be able to come to the Computer Center to
retrieve their materials may continue to do so. The shelving unit,
however, once located inside the Computer Center door will be
re-located. Effective December 4th, 2006 the shelving unit will be
located within the printer room in the Computer Center. This new
location will provide added security to the materials as only selected
employees have the appropriate card-access to gain entry to that room.
Operations personnel will be available in the Computer Center between
the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to assist departments in the retrieval
of their printed material. For a full version of these procedures or if
you have questions, please contact Karl Lehenbauer at x2355.
REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or
identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name
or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any
part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever
you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before
assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical
listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave
students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must
be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no
circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part
thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in
termination of Federal funding to the college. Questions regarding the
privacy of student records should be directed to Maureen Artale,
Assistant Registrar at x3018 or via e-mail at
artalemp@oneonta.edu.
FANS IN THE STANDS
“Fans in the Stands” is a new spirit organization consisting of anyone
with interest in helping to support our student-athletes. Our main goal
is to increase the amount of "fans in the stands". We are looking for
donated items to give away at home basketball games. At the battle of
the red dragons we were able to give away about 50 t-shirts that had
been donated to us. If anyone has any items they would like to
contribute we would strongly appreciate it. (t-shirts, Frisbees, water
bottles, pens, flashlights, etc. ANYTHING that we can toss into the
stands). We would also like to invite anyone interested in Fans in the
Stands to email Debbie Coburn at
coburndl@oneonta.edu and she will keep
you posted of upcoming meetings and events.
REMEMBER “PROJECT BLUE LIGHT” THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
A simple gesture by the mother of a Philadelphia police officer gunned
down in the line of duty led to the birth of “Project Blue Light.” As
you busy yourselves this month with holiday preparations, take a few
moments to remember all the law enforcement officers who have given
their lives in the line of duty. Locally, in past years, we lost
dedicated officers Constable Norm Carr and State Trooper Ricky Perisian.
Remember the memory of these brave officers and countless others by
placing a single blue light in a window of your home or apartment. This
holiday season, honor those who have committed themselves to you by
remembering “Project Blue Light.”
PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION MUST BE SHREDDED
This is a reminder to all faculty and staff from the Registrar’s Office
and the Office of Human Resources. Any printed material that contains
either student or employee personally identifiable information must be
shredded. It cannot be thrown into the garbage or with the recyclables.
Employees who do not have access to departmental shredders can use the
shredder that is located in the Print Shop, in the basement of the
Administration Building. Questions regarding student information should
be referred to Maureen Artale, Assistant Registrar, at x3018 or via
e-mail at artalemp@oneonta.edu. Questions regarding employee information
should be referred to the Office of Human Resources at x2509.
ADDING NEW EQUIPMENT TO EQUIPMENT INVENTORY
In most instances Property Management is routinely notified of new
equipment purchases so that items costing $1,500 or more can be added to
the College’s equipment inventory. Occasionally, however, a piece of
equipment that should be added to the inventory does not come to the
attention of the Property Management department. If you have received
equipment that cost $1,500 or more, and it has not been tagged within 30
days, please contact Janet Frankl, Milne Library, Room B217, at
x3227 (or
email: frankljl@oneonta.edu). Your assistance will be appreciated!

THANK YOU
Deepest thanks to all employees who donated clothing and other items to the campus “Share the Warmth” campaign. The initiative was a great success and a true testament to the generosity and compassion of SUNY Oneonta employees. All items remaining were donated to Family Services.
The members of the Employee Recruitment and Retention Task Force (ERRTF) and the President’s Council of Diversity (PCOD) wish to thank all faculty who attended the discussion about recruitment strategies. Many ideas were shared and, as a result, some initiatives are being considered and some are already being acted upon. We look forward to having a second discussion with you during the spring semester. We will update you about the upcoming initiatives in the near future.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Charles Dahan, Music on being awarded a $1,000 grant from the Starr Gennett Foundation for his and T. Malcolm Rockwell's research and authoring of the Gennett Records and Studio Complete Discography for the year 2007, with a promise for additional funding if the need should arise. Dr. Dahan also received permission from the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers at Newark to check out primary historical documents related to his research, a rather unprecedented grant of access from the Institute.
Congratulations to Janet Polak! Janet has continued to record her walking throughout the semester and has walked over 400 miles. That is amazing! She will be presented with a special gift from EAP for completing this amount of walking. We wish her luck in her retirement!
Congratulations to Barbara LoPiccolo of the Physical Education Department for attaining All-American status in four different track & field events, according to the most recent issue of the National Masters News. Barbara, an adjunct instructor in P.E. and a volunteer assistant track & field coach in Athletics at our college, met the standards in her age group for 2006 for all four throwing events: javelin, shotput, discus, and hammer throw. This summer she was victorious in all four events at both the New York State Senior Games and the Empire State Games. Later, at the National Masters Track & Field Championships in Charlotte, NC she won the gold medal in the javelin and the bronze medal in each of the other three events. Congratulations to Barbara!
Congratulations to Ashley Ramnes of Scotia, a junior Geography major at the College, on being selected as a recipient of a prestigious National Geographic Society internship. Ramnes, the fifth SUNY-Oneonta student selected for the program since its inception in 1981, is one of only 11 undergraduate students nationwide who will serve as National Geographic Society interns next year. Ramnes will spend the spring semester at the society's headquarters in Washington, DC, where she'll work on research, writing, and technology related to the environment and conservation. In the 25 years that the National Geographic Society internship has been offered, approximately 600 students nationwide have been selected as interns, including five from SUNY-Oneonta. Half of the internships are awarded to graduate students, many from major research universities. The 13-week internship program, which includes a stipend and a travel allowance, enables top students to apply the knowledge and techniques that they learn in the classroom to their professional responsibilities at the National Geographic Society. Interns work on the society's web site at www.nationalgeographic.com, its magazines, books, maps, and other geographic outreach projects.
Congratulations to Michael Valinoti, who graduated from the College in May with a degree in theater. Michael began performing in November with the 24-member national touring company of the Broadway play "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." Valinoti, who is 22, plays the double role of Joseph's father, Jacob, and the rich Egyptian, Potiphar. "Joseph" is Valinoti's first show since he graduated from and his first big break as a performer in the theater. As a senior at SUNY-Oneonta, Valinoti served as president of Mask & Hammer, the student theater company. Earlier, he had served on the group's executive board as secretary and vice president. In 2005, he directed a performance of Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" at the College. In 2006, Mask & Hammer honored Valinoti as its "best actor" for his performance in "Urinetown, the Musical" and voted him "most likely to succeed." Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. Originally structured as a short performance for a school in London, Webber and Rice expanded the show into a full musical in 1972. It was produced on Broadway in 1982, where it ran for 747 performances. It is now the longest-running touring stage musical of all time.
FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
Richard P. Barberio, Political Science, recently had entries published in the Encyclopedia of American Parties and Elections on the topics of ideology, radical ideology, moderate ideology, liberal ideology, conservative ideology, and the Democratic Leadership Council. The encyclopedia is published by Facts On File and is edited by Larry Sabato, a leading scholar of American parties and elections. According to the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Sabato is "probably the most quoted college professor in the land." The publication of this compendium has been highly praised by reviewers and stands to be an undergraduate and graduate reference staple for years to come.
Richard Frost, English, had twelve poems included in the December issue of Brilliant Corners (Lycoming College), a journal of jazz and literature. The poems center on a fictional character named Drummer.
Cynthia Lassonde, Elementary Education and Reading, was recently published in Student-directed Literacy, the 2006 Monograph of the New York State English Council along with her co-authors, who were all undergraduate students of hers from the SUNY College at Oneonta. The co-authors were Brianna Celetti, Anna Cozby, Tom DeBoer, and Shawn Foster. The article, "Peer Dialogue Journaling: Helping Each Other Take a Closer Look," explored the instructor's and students' perspectives of how peer dialogue journaling encouraged students to self-direct and construct personal understandings of readings about literacy theories, methods, and practices and to incorporate these understandings into their emerging teaching philosophies as they journaled about and discussed course readings.
Elaine Lawrence, Secondary Education, presented at the 2006 Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Conference in Dallas, TX. Her presentation, “Technology Integration and Teacher Training: The Effectiveness of Embedding Technology into Education Coursework,” was based on her dissertation research and discussed the need for introducing and modeling the use of technology in education courses.
Douglas Shrader, Philosophy, gave an invited presentation at the New England Association for Asian Studies Conference in Dartmouth, Massachusetts (November 3 - 5, 2006). Dr. Shrader’s paper was titled: “One World? Preliminary Thoughts Concerning Economic Globalization, Cultural Pluralism, and Religious Freedom.”
Tom Ryder, Executive Director of OAS, co-authored an article, entitled “A New York State of Mind,” which appears in the December issue of College Services (Journal of the National Association of College Auxiliary Services). The focus of the article is highlights of the history of SUNY Auxiliary Services Association, and its growth and accomplishments over the years. To read this article please, visit http://oas.oneonta.edu.
