CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the College on receiving the honor of being named to American Humanics President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. American Humanics is a national alliance of colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations that prepares and certifies college students for professional careers in youth and human service agencies. SUNY-Oneonta was one of 13 colleges and universities nationwide selected for the honor, which was presented at the opening ceremony of the American Humanics Management Institute on January 3, 2007 in Washington, D.C. David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and Dr. Kala Stroup, President of American Humanics, presented the honor roll. SUNY-Oneonta was represented by Christine Noonan, a senior Psychology major from Moriches, who participates in the American Humanics program through the College's Center for Social Responsibility and Community. The American Humanics President's Honor Roll responds to President Bush's call to service by building on and supporting the civic engagement mission of the nation's colleges and universities. SUNY-Oneonta has been a leader among American Humanics' campus affiliates. In 1997, the College at Oneonta became the first college in New York State to be awarded membership in American Humanics. More than 580 American Humanics students and faculty, as well as more than 300 nonprofit and corporate leaders, took part in the American Humanics Management Institute.
FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
Alison Black and Jane Miller, Elementary Education and Reading, presented at the New York State Reading Association's annual conference in Saratoga Springs this November. Their presentation, "English Language Learners and Emergent Literacy Learners" made the argument that the basic tenets of emergent literacy apply to English language learners and focused on effective literacy strategies appropriate for both.
Rob Compton, Political Science, was recently appointed to the UUP Statewide Task Force on New Academic Member Recruitment. He will also continue to serve on two other statewide committees: Corporatization and Globalization and the Political Action/Legislation
Ho Hon Leung, Sociology, with co-author Lynn McDonald, Director of Institute Life Course and Aging and Professor of Faculty of Social Work at University of Toronto, published an article entitled “Chinese women who care for ageing parents in three generational households: some immigrant experiences in Toronto”, in Asian Journal of Gerontology & Geriatrics, Vol. 1, No. 3, 2006. This article was to explore whether Chinese ethnicity and Chinese cultural practices serve as ethnic compensators functioning as positive resources for the caregivers and care receivers in Toronto. This issue is examined in the context of three generational households and immigrant experiences. Women found care giving a burden only when the care recipients were frail and ill, and immigration issues added challenges. The mobility and independence of elderly Chinese immigrants were largely reduced by language barriers, transportation, and lack of culturally and linguistically sensitive health and social services. The assistance available from able and healthy elderly parents lessened some of the caregivers’ problems settling into a new country, especially for those who needed to participate in the work force to support their families. This paper suggests that ethnic compensation is a rather bittersweet mixture. Although both caregivers and care receivers benefit from a reciprocal relationship in three generational households, such a practice is not without limitations.
William Simons, History, gave a presentation to the Dora and Harry Simon Senior Center at the Riverdale YM-YWHA in the Bronx on December 19, 2006. His lecture was entitled, “Where Have You Gone, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Greenberg: Ethnic Heroes in Baseball’s Melting Pot.” The presentation was sponsored by the Speakers in the Humanities Program of the New York Council for the Humanities.
