SUBMITTING PAPERS TO AN ANTI-PLAGIARISM SERVICE
If you are using an anti-plagiarism service such as
www.turnitin.com,
you must remove the student’s name and assign a code name to each paper
you submit. The code name must not be the student’s ID number or any
part there of and should only be known to you. Using the student’s name
or ID number is a violation of the students FERPA rights because you are
releasing personally identifiable information without his/her written
consent. If you have any questions on FERPA please contact Maureen Artale, Assistant Registrar at
x3108 or via e-mail at artalemp@oneonta.edu.
MARCH “ON CAMPUS" COMMUNITY EVENTS CALENDAR INFORMATION DUE
Please notify the Community Relations Office with any information to be
listed in the March “On Campus" public events calendar. Please send
information to Netzer 301, thomasrm@oneonta.edu, or phone
x2748 by 12:00
noon on Wednesday, February 14.
ATTENTION: FEDEX/UPS USERS
There are many variations of UPS and FedEx shipping forms on campus that
are not correct. If any office has UPS or FedEx shipping forms, please
discard them. Correct FedEx and UPS forms can be obtained from Mail
Services located in Netzer B9. Mail Services would like to remind
Faculty and Staff to put their name and the appropriate account number
on all Federal Express and UPS shipping paperwork when sending a college
related package. Personal packages can be shipped from the Shipping Room
located at the Hunt Union. If you have any questions please phone Pauline Koren, Manager of Mail Services, at
x3349 or send on email to mailroom@oneonta.edu.
STUDENTS HANDLING EXAMS
Students must not be involved in the preparation, duplication,
transportation or distribution of examinations. In addition, students
including undergraduate teaching assistants, must not be permitted to
grade, or in any manner process tests or papers. This includes using the
Scan Tron machines to grade tests or quizzes and distributing graded
materials to other students. If you have questions regarding this,
please contact Maureen Artale, Assistant Registrar, at x3108.
REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or
identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name
or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any
part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever
you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before
assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical
listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave
students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must
be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no
circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part
thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in
termination of Federal funding to the college. Questions regarding the
privacy of student records should be directed to Maureen Artale,
Assistant Registrar at x3108 or via e-mail at
artalemp@oneonta.edu.

JOIN THE SAFE SPACE PROGRAM
The mission of the Oneonta Safe Space Program is to support the campus
in its effort to foster a bias-free learning and working environment for
LGBTQ persons by providing education and training for the campus
community. The Oneonta Safe Space Program will build awareness of the
issues affecting LGBTQ persons as well as develop skills for allies. The
program works to create more campus spaces where LGBTQ persons feel
safe, supported, and valued as members of our college community. To
learn more about issues facing our LGBTQ students, faculty and staff
attend the 2-part workshop. After completing the workshop, faculty,
staff and students are invited to become a part of the Oneonta Safe
Space Network, but network membership is not a requirement for
participation in the actual workshop. The upcoming workshops are:

Monday - March 5 & 12, 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. (Faculty and Staff only)

BLOOD DRIVE SIGN-UPS - TODAY
SUNY-Oneonta's CSRC is back in action for the new year, and they will be
hosting another Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday & Wednesday, February
13 & 14 in the Hunt Union Ballroom. Usually a one-day affair, the
respective successes of the September, October, and December blood
drives during the fall semester brought with them the possibility that
if a drive is extended over a longer period of time, it could eliminate
some of the bottlenecking and overcrowding that comes along with the
more popular donation times during the day, and thus allow more people
to donate. As always, the signup tables can be found in Mills and
Wilsbach Dining Halls, and today, Wednesday, February 7, is the last day
to sign up, and this can be done from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and from
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Students can also come directly to the Center at
101C Alumni Hall to pre-register. All students who forego or are
rendered otherwise unable to register are encouraged to show up on
Tuesday, February 13 or Wednesday, February 14 at Hunt Union, although
there is no guarantee that there will be available space for donation.

They are beautiful. I appreciate your efforts in recognizing individuals

FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
Robert Compton, Political Science, published a book chapter titled “The Dynamics of Economic Development and AIDS in China and India: Assessing Governmental Response,” in HIV/AIDS and the Threat to National and International Security, ed. Robert Ostergard, Palgrave, 2007. His chapter examines and compares how economic development patterns in the two countries impacted the spread and government response to the HIV crisis and concludes that the democratic and decentralized system of India, despite its shortcomings, will be better able to handle the crisis in contrast to the more closed and bifurcated system of China. In addition, the research notes that failure to address the problems will have long-term negative consequences for both countries’ legitimacy.
Ho Hon Leung, Sociology, reviewed a grant application for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, based on an invitation from them to do so. This Research Council is one of the largest and most prestigious grant agencies in Canada. It is equivalent to the National Science Foundation in the US. The proposed study is to examine the issues of some elderly grandparents who come to Canada as visitors to take care of their grandchildren while the parents work full time.
Michael McAvoy, Economics, Finance and Accounting, published a book review in the December 2006 issue (vol. 7, no. 4, pp. 845-847) of Enterprise and Society: The International Journal of Business History. Michael reviewed the book by Timothy Messer-Kruse, Banksters, Bosses and Smart Money: A Social History of the Great Toledo Banking Crash of 1931 (Columbus, Ohio: The Ohio State University Press, 2004). Messer-Kruse’s contribution is one of the few examinations of the bank liquidation process during the early 1930s. While a book review is a chance to make a lifelong friend or enemy, thus far, no correspondence has been received.
