2007 STUDENT RESEARCH DAY WRAP-UP
On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 18, students and their faculty
mentors presented 52 research and creative activity projects at Student
Research Day (SRD) in the Morris Conference Center. The displays
represented the work of 95 students in collaboration with 34 faculty
sponsors. In addition to viewing the diverse student exhibits, visitors
had the opportunity to hear the SRD Keynote Address, Leveraging Applied
Research to Meet Critical Business Challenges, by College at Oneonta
alumnus Dr. John C. Scott ’77. THANK YOU to all participants and to the
staffs of Morris Conference Center, Academic Information Technology
Services, and the TLTC who helped to make the SRD a success (please see
information attached to this issue of the Bulletin). If you would like a
copy of the 2007 Student Research Day program, which includes abstracts,
please contact Kim Muller at
mullerkk@oneonta.edu or Kathy Meeker at
meekerkl@oneonta.edu in the Grants Development Office.

tape you have, please contact Donna at x3314.
CONTINUING HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR CHILDREN GRADUATING OR
LEAVING SCHOOL
Employees’ unmarried children currently enrolled under employees’ health
plans may qualify for three months of extended health insurance coverage
if 1) they are graduating from high school or college AND
2) they are
between the ages of 18 and 25. Forms to extend coverage for those
graduating should be completed and submitted to Human Resources no later
than the last day of the month in which the student completes his/her
coursework for graduation. Employees’ unmarried children currently
enrolled under employees’ health plans can continue their coverage under
COBRA if 1) they are leaving, but not graduating from high
school/college or changing student status to less than full time and 2)
they are not planning on returning to school during the following
semester on a full time basis and 3) they are between the ages of 18 and
25. To enroll in COBRA, dependents must contact the Employee Benefits
Division of the Department of Civil Service at 1-800-833-4344 prior to
or immediately after leaving school to avoid cancellation of coverage.
Please contact Human Resources at x2509 for forms and information.
REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or
identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name
or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any
part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever
you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before
assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical
listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave
students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must
be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no
circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part
thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in
termination of Federal funding to the college. Questions regarding the
privacy of student records should be directed to Michael Pastore,
College Registrar at x3216 or pastorma@oneonta.edu.
SUMMER 2007 DINING HOURS
Serving breakfast, lunch, & dinner, seven days a week. Questions may be directed to Campus Dining Services at x2449.
MOVING EQUIPMENT
The College is required by the State Comptroller to maintain
accountability for its equipment at all times. SUNY Oneonta currently
maintains inventory records of computers and other equipment
particularly vulnerable to loss or theft with an original cost of $500
or more and other moveable equipment with an original cost of $1,500 or
more. When equipment is moved between buildings and/or departments
without notification to the Property Management Office the annual
inventory process is unnecessarily complicated for the Departments
involved and for Property Control; the otherwise positive outcome of any
equipment audit is also jeopardized. When equipment has been or will be
moved, notify the Property Management office immediately by email to
frankljl@oneonta.edu or by
memo to Janet Frankl, B217 Milne Library.
Provide the SUNY-Oneonta decal number, manufacturer's serial number,
previous location and new location. Your cooperation will be very
helpful and greatly appreciated. For further information, please contact
Janet Frankl at x3227.
USING COLLEGE-OWNED EQUIPMENT OFF- CAMPUS
Appropriate approval is required for off-campus use of College-owned
equipment. Send inquiries regarding off-campus use of College-owned
equipment to Janet Frankl by email to
frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to
B217 Milne Library. Technology Services in IRC has independent authority
to grant approval for equipment under its jurisdiction.
ADDING NEW EQUIPMENT TO EQUIPMENT INVENTORY
In most instances Property Management is routinely notified of new
equipment purchases so items that meet the criteria are added to the
College’s equipment inventory. Occasionally, however, a piece of
equipment that should be added to the inventory does not come to the
attention of the Property Management department. If your new equipment
has not been tagged within 30 days of receipt, please contact Janet Frankl by email at
frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to
B217 Milne
Library. Your assistance will be appreciated!
SURPLUS EQUIPMENT
All departments should direct requests to have surplus computer or
related equipment removed from your department to Mark English, Manager
- Technology Services via memo or email,
englisme@oneonta.edu with copy
to Janet Frankl frankljl@oneonta.edu. Computer hard-drives will be
reformatted, insuring removal of any sensitive information, & the
equipment will be evaluated for possible reassignment to another
department on campus. Direct surplus requests for non-computer equipment
to Janet Frankl. Include the following data on all surplus requests:
Description, SUNY-Oneonta decal number, manufacturer's serial number,
condition and current location.

MENTAL HEALTH COURTS: ALTERNATIVES TO JAIL - TODAY
Today, Wednesday, May 2, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the
Morris Conference
Center, a presentation followed by a question and answer session is
scheduled on the topic of Mental Health Courts: Alternatives to Jail.
Guest presenters will be the Honorable Matthew J. D’Emic, graduate of
Fordham University and Brooklyn Law School; Sgt. Daniel Berardini,
commanding officer of Emotionally Disturbed Persons Response Team, East
Division, Rochester Police Department, Monroe County; Lucille Jackson, LCSW, project and clinical director of Brooklyn Mental Health Court; and
Robert Corliss, MA, mental health advocate with the Mental Health
Associate, NY state. Mental health courts serve as an alternative to the
“criminalization of mental illness.” They are one of several types of
problem solving courts set up ostensibly to contend with a myriad of
social and psychological issues that traditional court processes are not
designed to address. Mental health courts function as a diversion from
incarceration to community-based treatment and support services for
mentally ill people apprehended by police for aberrant behavior
perceived to be dangerous to self or others, including misdemeanors and
non-violent felonies. The object is to prevent the problems from
resurfacing as repeat cases. Mental health courts are a collaborative,
multidisciplinary approach involving the judicial, criminal justice and
mental health systems. The primary objective of these courts is to link
offenders with mental health and other community service programs in
order to restabilize them, reduce recidivism, and improve public safety.
Eligibility requires an offender to be 18 years of age or older, to have
a serious and persistent mental illness judged to be attributed to the
offense, and the offender must plead guilty and participate in a program
voluntarily. The structure of a mental health court program involves the
offender submitting to a psychological assessment and a psychiatric
evaluation, mandated treatment (12 to 24 months), clinical and judicial
monitoring on a fixed schedule of appearances in court, and service
coordination. The latter is to assure stabilization of the offender’s
illness by receiving appropriate medication for his/her diagnosis and
therapy, and getting access to housing, education, employment and the
like. All are invited to attend! For additional information please
contact Reva Baldwin at x3318.

SEASON FINALE FOR CATSKILL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - MAY 5
The Catskill Symphony Orchestra will conclude its season on Saturday,
May 5 with an 8:00 p.m. concert in the Hunt College Union. This concert
will include homecomings of two sorts: First, a performance of Tina
Davidson’s Celestial Turnings for string orchestra will mark a literal
return home for the composer who, although born in Sweden, was raised in
Oneonta. Davidson is a highly regarded composer who writes “real music,
with structure, mood, novelty and harmonic sophistication - with
haunting melodies that grow out of complex, repetitive rhythms”
(Philadelphia Inquirer). Her 25-year career has included commissions by
well-known ensembles such as the National Symphony and many more.
Davidson’s compositions have been performed by many orchestras and
ensembles, including The Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra, and others. Secondly, pianist Anthony Molinaro, whose
previous solo appearances with the CSO have earned him a broad fan base
in Oneonta, will “return home” to play Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in
G, a work known for its haunting beauty as well as for its infusion of
jazz elements. His appearance with the CSO is made possible by a
generous gift from Jim & Karen Elting. The concert will conclude with
the Richard Strauss 1920 Suite Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (A Middle Class
Gentleman), which is based on the Moliere 1670 comedy about a newly
wealthy man who tries in vain to find his proper place in high society.
This concert is generously sponsored by Bassett Healthcare. Funded in
part by SUNY-Oneonta, and made possible with public funds from the NYS
Council on the Arts, a State Agency. The Catskill Symphony Orchestra is
a member of the Otsego County Arts Alliance, which is supported by
Otsego County Occupancy Tax revenues and the Wilber National Bank.
Tickets will be available at the door, or phone the CSO Office at
607-436-2670 (see our web site at:
http://www.catskillsymphony.org/)
Because of an anonymous donation, any one or two adults can, without
charge, reserve seats for themselves and any number of young people to
this concert by phoning the Symphony Office.
