ATTENTION: EMPLOYEES ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS
Effective May 01, 2007, the NYS Department of Civil Service will afford recognition to any same-sex marriage that is legal in the jurisdiction where the marriage was performed for purposes of providing spousal benefits for the following insurance programs provided by the State of New York: health, vision, dental, M/C life and long term care. At this time, same-sex marriages are recognized in the following jurisdictions: Massachusetts, Canada, Spain, South Africa, the Netherlands and Belgium. There is a special enrollment period which ends May 31, 2007 for marriages which occur May 31, 2007 or earlier. Effective date of coverage depends upon date of marriage and date enrollment form is signed. Forms signed after May 31, 2007 will be subject to normal effective date rules; however, exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for marriages occurring on or before May 31, 2007. NOTE: For CSEA and UUP employees, there is currently no determination as to whether or not spousal benefits for same sex marriages will be made available for vision and dental insurance which is provided by each of their union’s benefit trust funds. Furthermore, for marriages not occurring in recognized jurisdictions and for employees who have been living with someone of the same or opposite gender for at least 6 months (12 months in some cases), the state offers “domestic partner” coverage for qualifying couples. If anyone is interested in enrolling a qualifying spouse or domestic partner or has any questions, please contact Human Resources at x2509.

Donors’ identities are kept confidential so on behalf of Marty, this is a general “thank you” to all who have donated. Marty could use additional donations and they would be very much appreciated. CATSKILL SYMPHONY TO EXPAND SEASON IN 2007-08
The Catskill Symphony has announced plans to expand its subscription series to five concerts for the 2007-2008 season. The added program will be a Sunday, December 9 Choral Extravaganza, involving hundreds of area high school choruses, who will join the Symphony in a program of seasonal music. This involvement with area public schools marks the first time the CSO has performed with high school singers, and promises to be an excellent opportunity for young musicians to have the experience performing great vocal literature with a full symphony orchestra. Music Director Charles Schneider has conducted similar programs with the Utica Symphony with great popular success. The other four concerts on the subscription series will offer the public a rich mixture of selections, including a solid sampling of traditional repertoire and several colorful offering less often heard. The opening program on Saturday, September 29 will include the well-known William Tell Overture and the Beethoven 5th Symphony, a backbone of orchestral literature, and will feature pianist Wei-Jen Yuan with the Rachmaninoff third Piano Concerto. The Saturday, November 3 concert is highlighted by Soprano Colby Thomas in a performance of Samual Barber’s Knoxville, Summer 1915. The Tchaikowsky Serenade for Strings and Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony round out the concert. The annual CABARET! Concert on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, will feature an unusual offering in Howard Levy, internationally known harmonica virtuoso, who has performed widely in concert with pianist Anthony Molinaro. The season will conclude on Saturday, May 3, 2008 in a choral concert built around the Edward Elgar Coronation Ode. The Symphony is offering “early bird” season tickets at discount rates for those who subscribe before Saturday, June 30. Phone the Symphony Office at x2670 for information and ticket reservations.

THANK YOU
  • Thank you to SUNY-Shine for the kind expression of sympathy upon the recent passing of my father. It was greatly appreciated.
    Tim Toth, Biological Field Station
  • Thank you to all our colleagues and friends for your cards, your tenderness, and your support during the last year as we cared for Margaret Grauerholz (Ron Greywood’s mom). Eldercare taught us much about ourselves and our friends. Although the loss of Peggy is difficult, we would not have been able to give her the care we did if we didn’t have you to talk to about our concerns and frustrations, if we didn’t have you to go the extra mile at work, and if we didn’t have your shoulders to lean against when times got tough. We appreciate the multiple donations made in Peggy’s name to Hospice and the gift cards for our personal memorial garden, but mostly, we simply appreciate knowing we work with such kind and caring people.
Ronald Greywood, Residence Life & Housing
    Eileen McClafferty, Academic Advisement
CONGRATULATIONS
  • Congratulations to Tom Rathbone and Tom Ryder who were presented with the Ross Cordell Award at the Athletic Award’s banquet on Monday, May 7, 2007. The Ross Cordell Award is given to an individual or company that has made a significant contribution to the athletic program. It is named after Ross Cordell, a generous man with a great love for student athletes. He was considered a change agent and was a pleasure to work with, a gentlemen and a true ambassador of the human spirit. Tom Rathbone was recognized for his accomplishments in facility operations. Tom Ryder was acknowledged for his leadership at OAS with respect to positive change in Dining Services, the Red Dragon Bookstore, vendor relationships, and his focus on customer service. It is fitting that both Tom’s were recognized as they have worked so collaboratively for the benefit of the College on so many facility improvements. According to Tracey Ranieri, the College Athletic Director, “they both embody the legacy of Ross Cordell and continue to champion the needs of students on our campus.”
  • Congratulations to early childhood teacher education students Nancy Datz, Patricia Patrissi, Chelsie Ruff, and Carey Williams on their poster presentations given at the Student Poster Session of the New York State Association for the Education for the Education of Young Children Annual Conference in Westchester, NY, on May 4, 2007. The posters focused on the issues of poverty and hunger in the US and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The students also gathered signatures on petitions related to these issues.
