CONGRATULATIONS
  • Congratulations to the three University Police Officers that were made Technical Sergeants on Saturday, May 19, 2007 due to their expertise in training through the University Police Training Academy. They are Technical Sergeants Shawn E. Callahan, Jonathan D. Bartlett; and William J. Baker. Also, congratulations to the following officers who received Excellent Service Awards for their recognition in training: Technical Sergeant William J. Baker; Technical Sergeant Jonathan D. Bartlett; Officer Nathaniel R. Leonard; Officer Michael R. O’Donnell; and Officer Stephen T. Kelley. Lastly, congratulations to the following officers who received Meritorious Service Awards for their acts of valuable police service: Technical Sergeant Shawn E. Callahan; Officer Timothy W. Ludden; Officer Daniel N. Rommer and Lieutenant Merritt L. Hunt. These officers were given the recognition before the current Academy being conducted at the University. Vice President Steven R. Perry presented the awards.
  • Congratulations to Alison Black and Anna M. Stave, Division of Education, who are co-authors of a new book entitled A Comprehensive Guide to Readers Theatre: Enhancing Fluency and Comprehension in Middle School and Beyond, which was published recently by the International Reading Association. The two faculty members worked with seventh grade students and their teachers in the Sidney and Cooperstown middle schools in developing the book, and they will present copies of the book to the students in assemblies at their schools this month. While writing the book, Drs. Black and Stave spent time observing and talking with students who participated in reader’s theatre activities in the seventh grade classes of teachers Stephanie Hurlbert of Sidney and Ann Olmstead of Cooperstown. Now ninth graders, the students have eagerly awaited the publication of "their" book and checked on its progress regularly. Black and Stave presented the students copies of the book in an assembly in the Sidney middle school cafeteria on Wednesday, June 6. They plan to make a similar presentation in Cooperstown this week. A Comprehensive Guide to Readers Theatre contains photos o the local students' productions as well as quotations from them about their work. A May "Book Club" selection of the International Reading Association, the book offers practical advice for teachers on how to implement readers theatre in the classroom and how to use it to meet current literacy standards. It includes supplementary activities, reproducible assessment tools, hands-on demonstrations of script creation, performance schedules, and matrices illustrating how reader’s theatre meets literacy standards.
  • Congratulations to William M. Simons, History, on serving as Director of the 19th annual Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, June 6 - June 8, 2007. In a panel on "Using Baseball in the Classroom," Dr. Simons presented a seminar entitled "Teaching Baseball and American Culture.” Simons' presentation is based on his extensive experience in research, writing, and teaching about the history of baseball and its impacts on American society. Since 2000, Simons has served as the editor of annual collections of essays from the symposia entitled "The Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture," which have been published by McFarland and Company Publishers. He has presented at the Cooperstown symposia several times, and he has participated in all 18 previous symposia. This is his second year serving as director. Simons was joined at this year's symposium by keynote speaker Curt Smith, an acclaimed author, award-winning radio/television commentator, and former presidential speechwriter. During the symposium, more than 40 papers were presented by scholars from colleges and universities across the country. Co-sponsored by the SUNY College at Oneonta and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the symposium examines the impact of baseball on American culture from multi-disciplinary perspectives.
FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
  • Adrienne Martini, Communication Arts, was an invited speaker at the Florida Association for Infant Mental Health's Annual conference on May 16 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Her presentation was "If Mama Ain't Happy, Ain't Nobody Happy" and was a 90-minute lecture (with pictures) about material covered in her book Hillbilly Gothic: A Memoir of Madness and Motherhood.
  • John Relethford, Anthropology, is the author of a book chapter entitled "Population genetics and paleoanthropology" that appears in the Handbook of Paleoanthropology, Volume 1: Principles, Methods and Approaches, edited by W. Henke and I. Tattersall (Springer, 2007, pp. 621-641). Relethford's chapter reviews the three ways in which population genetics has contributed to our understanding of human evolution: 1. genetic studies of living humans, 2. studies of ancient DNA, and 3. developing predictive models from population genetics.
  • Hurrem Yilmaz, Management Marketing and Information Systems, presented a paper, “The Impact of Co-Promotion on the Supply Chain”, at the Decision Sciences Institute Miniconference on Service Science, in Pittsburgh, sponsored by IBM, Carnegie Mellon University and Bentley College. The research proposed a co-promotion model and provided hypotheses based on the model about best and worst performing co-promoted products and company combinations. This research should be significant for marketing and operations professionals because matching products and co-promotion partners can be an important determinant of co-promotion campaign’s success.
