MUSIC FROM CHINA TO PERFORM - JULY 3
The Hewitt Pantaleoni Memorial Concert Series will present its first-ever summer session concert on Tuesday, July 3, when the highly acclaimed New York City-based ensemble Music From China visits campus. The program, which is free and open to all, will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Courtyard Performance Space, weather permitting. In case of rain it will move inside, to the Hamblin Arena Theater. The musicians in the group will perform a program primarily of traditional Chinese music, played on instruments such as the erhu, the pipa and the cheng, but their program will also include one contemporary selection, Romance and Dance, by the award-winning Chinese-American composer Chin Yi. Soloist on that piece will be the group’s music director Wang Guowei, performing on the erhu, accompanied by guest pianist Kim Paterson, of the music department faculty. Music From China’s visit is made possible with primary funding from the New York State Music Fund, administered by the Rockefeller Foundation, with public funds obtained by Governor Eliot Spitzer’s successful prosecution, while he was serving as Attorney General, of several music industry firms for “payola.” Additional funding is provided by the Catskill Conservatory, the New York State Council on the Arts, the SUNY-Oneonta Music Department and the President’s Office. Refreshments will be served at a reception following the concert. It should also be noted that the Chinese Musicians and Mr. Paterson will be performing the following day, at 5:00 p.m., at the Conservatory’s 10th annual Quiet Concert for the Fourth, at the Windfall Dutch Barn. Neither tickets nor reservations are necessary for either program, and additional information can be obtained by phoning x3419.
