STUDENTS UNEARTH ARTIFACTS IN ARCHEOLOGICAL DIG
Fifteen students from the College at Oneonta and Hartwick College are participating in a summer archaeological field school, excavating a site adjacent at Pine Lake that was occupied by Native Americans from 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. Under the co-direction of Renee Walker of the SUNY-Oneonta Anthropology Department and Cynthia Klink of the Hartwick Anthropology Department, the students have found two large hearth features, approximately 15 spear points, and dozens of ground stone tools used for grinding seeds or nuts. During the field school, which is now in its final week, students learn how to excavate units, screen for artifacts, interpret sediment, and conduct lab work for processing artifacts. Nicole Thorn, a 2005 graduate of SUNY-Oneonta who is doing graduate work at SUNY-Albany, serves as a teaching assistant for the course.

Participants in the field school, which is offered every two years, live at Hartwick's Environmental Campus at Pine Lake in West Davenport for a month. More information about the Archeological Field School is available from the College Anthropology Department at x3345.

CONGRATULATIONS
  • Congratulations to Leif S. Hartmark, Vice President for Finance and Administration, on receiving the 2007 Robert J. Wagner Outstanding Business Officer of the Year Award from the State University Business Officers Association. He received the award on June 19 at the association's conference. The recipient of the Business Officer of the Year award is selected by SUNY business officers in recognition of outstanding work, based on nominations from SUNY campuses. As part of the award, the association made a $500 contribution to the College at Oneonta Foundation in Dr. Hartmark's name.
  • Congratulations to William M. Simons, History, on his new collection of essays entitled The Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, 2005-2006, which were released recently by McFarland and Company Publishers. The work is the eighth in the Cooperstown Symposium series, the last five of which have been edited by Dr. Simons. The 16 essays in the book are grouped thematically into six sections, entitled The African American Experience, The Women's Game, Baseball and Community, Baseball Ideology, Biography: Baseball Lives, and The Business of Baseball. Written by baseball scholars from colleges and universities across the country, the essays were originally presented as papers at the 2005 and 2006 symposia at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Dr. Simons wrote the introduction to the volume and contributed an essay entitled "From Exaltation to Historiography: A Celebration of 143 American Jews in America's Game, 1871-2004." The essay is based on the 2004 conference on Jewish baseball history at the Hall of Fame at which Dr. Simons was a presenter and participant. His essay explores the significance of the conference in the development of the Jewish identity in America, both in baseball and in society. "The Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, 2005-2006" is available from online booksellers or from the publisher at www.mcfarlandpub.com.
FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
  • Izabella Lokshina, Management, Marketing and Information Systems, published a research paper in Journal of Electrical Engineering, Vol. 58, No.3, 2007. Her paper titled Clustering And Neural Modeling For Performance Evaluation Of Mobile Communication Networks, presents a new approach to performance evaluation for the core network model of universal mobile telecommunication system with calls that belong to one of four service classes and arrive randomly. Arriving calls are granted service based on specific service class, required maximum and minimum bandwidth, and available network resources. Performance of priority-based dynamic capacity allocation, suitable for the wireless ATM system is analyzed. The optimal link occupancy probability distribution is determined using neural network trained on the base of Kohonen rules. Simulation and numerical results are shown.
  • Geoffrey O'Shea, Psychology, recently collaborated with Dr. Nancy Zook and a team of student researchers from SUNY-Purchase on a research project that was presented at the 19th annual meeting of the Association for Psychological Science (APS) in Washington, DC from May 24 to May 27, 2007. The poster entitled, Working Memory Capacity and Awareness in the Hebb Digits Task, reported findings indicating that individual differences in working memory capacity modulate the development of awaroeness for regularities in an implicit learning task. These results suggest that a greater ability to hold information in memory, under conditions of distraction, leads to a greater knowledge of the underlying properties of the task one is performing. These findings add to the significant body of research that Dr. O'Shea has conducted on the issue of awareness in the Hebb Digits task.
  • John Relethford, Anthropology, has published the seventh edition of his textbook The Human Species: An Introduction to Biological Anthropology (McGraw-Hill). The previous edition has been adopted in roughly 140 different colleges and universities in 39 states. Schools that have used the text include SUNY at Binghamton, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, University of California at Berkeley, Dartmouth College, and SUNY College at Oneonta.
