VIDEO SURVEILLANCE POLICY
The college has developed a Video Surveillance Policy in anticipation of installing cameras in selected areas of the campus to enhance safety and security. The policy, attached to this edition of the Bulletin, is based on a template developed by staff at SUNY Legal counsel and has been reviewed by counsel. The policy can also be found at http://www.oneonta.edu/security/surveillancepolicy.asp. Presentation and discussion about the policy has or will be scheduled with the College Council, College Senate, Campus Safety Committee, Personal Safety Committee, OAS Board of Directors, Parking and Traffic Commission, Student Association, and Resident Student Organization. Questions and concerns should be addressed to Steven Perry, Vice President of Student Development or Barton Ingersoll, Associate Vice President and Chief of Police.

BEST PRACTICES IN TEACHING AND COUNSELING
Best Practices in Teaching and Counseling, the fourth annual conference for elementary and secondary teachers and school counselors, will take place on Friday, October 19 in the Hunt College Union. Information about the program and registering is attached to this issue of the Bulletin.

LEE NATIONAL DENIM DAY
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the EAP Committee will be holding our third. Annual Lee National Denim Day on Friday, October 5. Please see information attached to this issue of the Bulletin for more details.

REPORT THREATS AND CRIMES
In the interest of campus safety and security, all members of the campus community are encouraged to phone the Office of Student Development, x2513, to express concerns about anyone who might be regarded as a threat to themselves or others. If there is an immediate threat or emergency, phone University Police at 911 or x3550. All employees are expected to inform the College if they know of a crime that has been committed on campus. Members of the campus community will be notified if such information indicates that there is a threat to the safety of the community.

CORRECTION TO “WORK REQUEST” PHONE NUMBER
The Facilities Operations announcement attached to the Wednesday, September 5 edition of the Bulletin gave the phone number for “Work Request” contact as x2507. The correct number as listed in the Campus Telephone Directory, is x3283.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE SIEGFRIED PRIZE - OCTOBER 5 DEADLINE
The Academic Excellence Committee has issued a call for applications for the annual Richard Siegfried Junior Faculty Prize for Academic Excellence. All College at Oneonta full-time, non-tenured faculty are eligible to apply for the $1,000 prize. The deadline for applications is Friday, October 5. A campus-wide mailing of the award criteria has been done. If you did not receive an application, or if you have questions concerning the application, you may contact William Simons, Chair of the AEC, at x3498. The Richard Siegfried Junior Faculty Prize for Academic Excellence is funded by a gift from Alice Siegfried in memory of her husband and in honor of his commitment to academic excellence. The College at Oneonta Alumni Association’s 2007-2008 Alumni Annual Fund supports this annual event also.

ODK SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP
The Oneonta Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, is seeking nominations for membership in the Honorary Member and Faculty Member categories. Membership in ODK is considered a high honor and a mark of distinction. Exemplary character, responsible leadership, service in campus and community life and outstanding scholarship are indispensable qualifications for membership. Membership is awarded primarily to students who are juniors and seniors, but honorary members and members of the faculty and administration may also be invited into membership. Please review the criteria below. Letters of nomination should address the criteria defined and should be sent, in confidence, to Karen Brown, ODK Secretary, 116 Alumni Hall, no later than October 1, 2007. Faculty Members/Administration - Nominees must have been employed by the College for a minimum of 3 years, and have a record of exemplary character, scholarship, service and leadership in campus life, and good citizenship within the academic and larger community. Two nominees may be selected each semester. Honorary Members (honoris causa) - Nominees must have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the local, state, national or international community. It is not necessary that they have previous affiliation with the College. One nominee may be selected each semester.

CALL FOR CELEBRATION OF TEACHING POSTER PRESENTATIONS
President Donovan and Provost Larkin invite members of the College Community to participate in this year’s Celebration of Teaching, a half-day event with keynote speaker, roundtables, and poster sessions intended as a way for SUNY-Oneonta community members to share and celebrate our teaching experience. One excellent way to participate is to present a poster at the Celebration. Take advantage of this opportunity to reveal your teaching strategies, experiences, projects, and ideas. To submit a poster, send the poster title and abstract - 100-200 words -to Cynthia Lassonde at lassonc@oneonta.edu by Monday, October 1. The Celebration will take place on Thursday, November 8 from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Hunt College Union. Please join us as a participant and a poster presenter! The Oneonta Country Club is inviting all Faculty and Staff to play a round of golf. As part of its Fall Membership Drive - September 23 - September 29, you can play 18 holes of golf including a cart for $35. If you would like to become a member, a $350 prepayment toward next year’s dues will allow you to play the rest of this year and also waive the $1000 initiation fee. Students assigned to your department that will be doing classroom work for you in the Instructional Support Center this semester, must have their names on file in the ISC. YOGA AND MEDICATION SOCIETY SCHEDULE
The Yoga and Meditation Society for the Scientific Study of Spirituality will celebrate its fourth year by presenting the following speakers during the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semesters:

This lecture series, which is free to the public, is supported by a grant from the Metanexus Institute and the College. UUP NEEDS VOLUNTEERS AT SATURDAY’S BREAD - OCTOBER 6
On Saturday, October 6, UUP Oneonta will again staff Saturday’s Bread, a community kitchen that dispenses hot meals and good cheer. UUP’s Linda Drake will, again, co-ordinate our chapter’s participation in this worthwhile community service. Although Saturday’s Bread is housed at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut Street the program is a non-denominational and humanitarian service that is open to all. To be part of the UUP Oneonta volunteer group, you must be willing to work from 9:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. As we need an exact list of the names and numbers of participants, please e-mail drakelm@oneonta.edu to volunteer. When you contact Linda, please provide her with your full name, e-mail, and telephone number. Kudos to Linda, the Executive Director of the Center for Social Responsibility and UUP’s Director of Community Service, for continuing to facilitate the involvement of chapter members and others in a variety of benevolent enterprises.

Otsego County Retired Teachers Association (OCRTA) and its partners are gathering new and gently used sweaters and light jackets of any style for local distribution. This is in conjunction with WSKG Public Broadcasting. ENRICHMENT SEMINAR PROGRAM BEGINS - OCTOBER 6
The Catskill Area School Study Council announces the Enrichment Seminar Program for the fall semester will begin on Saturday, October 6. The objective of the program, which is in its 48th continuous year, is to enhance the intellectual horizons of students by offering stimulating experiences in courses not offered by their own schools. Classes are held on campus on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The classes will meet on October 6, 13, 20 and 27. The list of offerings for grades 3-8 is divided into the categories of Arts & Humanities and Athletics. Courses include arts and crafts, karate, babysitting training, and several types of musical and theatrical performance. There is also a six-week S.A.T. Preparation Course for students in grades 11-12, which also begins on October 6 and ends November 10. The deadline to register is September 19. Students must register through their school district, and districts must be members of the Catskill Area School Study Council in order to participate. POSTING ON IRC BULLETIN BOARDS
The IRC Staff is continually working to keep lobby bulletin boards in order. Anyone who wishes to post announcements in the IRC will need to bring their items to the IRC Main Office, Room 104. If no one is in the office when you arrive, please leave your items in the holder on the office door with a name and contact number. Your items will be posted within a short time of receiving them. Staff will remove outdated notices and post new announcements daily. Thank you for your cooperation.

KEEP SUNY-Shine INFORMED
SUNY-Shine needs your help! In order for the fund to be effective, information about persons who are hospitalized, weddings, births, deaths, exceptional hardships, etc., need to be reported. Please do not assume that someone else will provide the information to the SUNY-Shine Committee. If anyone on campus has information that the SUNY-Shine Committee needs to be aware of, please take the time to phone Rose Thomas at x2748, or send a note to the Community Relations Office, 301 Netzer Administration Building. Funding for SUNY-Shine is made possible on an annual basis through gifts and grants to the College Foundation.

CONGRATULATIONS
  • Congratulations to James Small, University Police Captain, on being hired as an adjunct faculty instructor at SUNY Delhi for the Fall ‘07 semester. Captain Small will be instructing “Introduction to Criminal Justice”, for the criminal justice program. Captain Small has 33 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, is a certified New York State master police instructor, and is currently working on a master’s degree in criminal justice administration.
FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
  • Jon Bartlett, University Police Sergeant, recently conducted a bicycle safety program for the Town of New Berlin Police Department, on August 25, 2007. Sergeant Bartlett is a certified master police mountain bike instructor and solicits donated bicycles from area businesses to give to needy youths as prizes during his bike safety presentations.
  • Robert Compton, Political Science, was Visiting Scholar at South Africa’s University of Kwa-Zulu Natal’s (UKZN) Center for Civil Society (CCS) during June and July, 2007. During his stay there, he participated in regular seminars, made site visitations in Durban, attended the South Africa Netherlands Partnership in Alternatives in Development (SANPAD) conference, conducted a graduate class on “accumulation by dispossession,” and delivered a presentation titled “Developmental States’ Debates from East Asia to South Africa” on July 13th. He also delivered this presentation at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on July 18, 2007. CCS serves as a research unit on issues relevant to civil society, including economic marginalization and contemporary social movements. CCS also develops and promotes partnerships aimed at knowledge sharing and capacity-building in African and global civil society. During his time in Southern Africa, Compton also went to Harare, Zimbabwe to provide advice and assistance to SUNY Center for International Development’s (CID) ongoing Zimbabwe Project. The project will have continued funding into fiscal year (FY) 2008 with a greater focus on the interaction between civil society organizations (CSO) and Parliament.
  • April Harper, History, recently traveled to Leeds, England to deliver a paper entitled, Images of the female healer in medieval literature, in a symposium on the sources for medical history outside medical texts. The paper was delivered at the International Medieval Congress held annually at the University of Leeds, which is the largest gathering of medievalists in the world. The paper is part of a project to be carried out with Iona McCleery and Clare Pilsworth, funded by the Wellcome Trust for the History of Medicine on the popular sources of medical history in the Middle Ages.
  • Mark Rice, Director of Counseling, Wellness Center, recently completed his term as past President of the Association for SUNY Counseling Center Directors. He helped to create the organization in 2004-2005 and then served as President in 2005-2006 and past President in 2006-2007. The mission of the Association of SUNY Counseling Center Directors is to promote and assure the highest possible degree of mental health and wellness of students and campus communities within the SUNY system. The association is composed of Counseling Center Directors within the SUNY system and its goals include: advocating within the SUNY system and local campuses for support of counseling programs and services; creating a forum for discussing administrative issues, clinical care issues and the myriad of services that Counseling Centers provide to SUNY campuses; and representing the mental health related interests of SUNY students and the campus community to appropriate local, state and national groups, both public and private.
  • Bill Simons, History, is the author of a recently published article, A Conference on Baseball and American Culture. The essay appeared in the April-May 2007 issue of Memories and Dreams.
