POPULAR READING COLLECTION AT MILNE LIBRARY
The library’s new leisure reading collection is now available in the reading room on the first floor of the building (room 118). The set consists of almost 400 books. There are plenty of novels by authors like Dean Koontz, James Patterson, Kate Wilhelm, Alexander McCall Smite, John Sanford and Margaret Coel. There are also mysteries, romances, suspense, action, and science fiction. The collection also includes popular non-fiction titles such as biographies (Mel Gibson, Billy Crystal, Bob Knight) and other current reads like You’re Wearing WHAT? Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation and The President of Good and Evil: The Ethics of George Bush. Unlike the books in Milne’s collection, these special collection books have the book jackets with photos of the authors and summaries describing the content, making it more like bookstore browsing. The collection will be changing over time as new books are cycled in to replace ones that have been on the shelves for a while. All of these books may be checked out for four weeks with your Oneonta ID.
MILNE’S NEW PERIODICAL ROOM OPENS
Milne Library’s new periodical room, located on basement level 1, below the old periodical room, will open on Thursday, October 25. The current browsing collection of magazines, journals, and newspapers, formerly shelved in the corridor outside the periodical room, is now shelved in the Reading Room on the first floor in room 118, as they have been during the renovation. Periodicals and microforms will no longer need to be requested and paged; individuals can retrieve them from the shelves. Thank you for your patience during the transition. If you have any questions, contact Andrea Gerberg at x2774.

During his visit to SUNY-Oneonta, Joe Fab will also speak with students in education, history, and film classes at the College and present a workshop for area teachers through the Catskill Regional Teacher Center. Joe Fab, Vice President of The Johnson Group, is an award-winning producer and writer with more than 30 years experience in film and video production, media and communications, event production, and the live presentation of plays and music. The paper is entitled From Cumquats to Kedgeree: 'Eating the Other' at the British Empire Exhibition. This paper examines the meanings attributed to 'exotic' foods and cuisine made available to exhibition visitors in the Indian and Hong Kong pavilions at the British Empire Exhibition. While the sampling of food served is a form culinary imperialism, this cultural exchange potentially enabled colonial exhibitors to invent 'traditional' cuisines as a means of constructing and performing identities, thereby claiming cultural authority for themselves. This paper is open to SUNY-Oneonta and Hartwick College faculty only. RSVP Matthew Hendley at hendlem@oneonta.edu, if you are able to attend this faculty seminar. Copies of the paper will be circulated to interested faculty in advance. Dr. Clendinning is the author of Demons of domesticity : women and the English gas industry, 1889-1939 (Burlington, Vt: Ashgate, 2004) which is a study of “lady demonstrators” of gas kitchen appliances in early twentieth century Britain. KEEP SUNY-Shine INFORMED
SUNY-Shine needs your help! In order for the fund to be effective, information about persons who are hospitalized, weddings, births, deaths, exceptional hardships, etc., need to be reported. Please do not assume that someone else will provide the information to the SUNY-Shine Committee. If anyone on campus has information that the SUNY-Shine Committee needs to be aware of, please take the time to phone Rose Thomas at x2748, or send a note to the Community Relations Office, 301 Netzer Administration Building. Funding for SUNY-Shine is made possible on an annual basis through gifts and grants to the College Foundation.
ADDING NEW EQUIPMENT TO EQUIPMENT INVENTORY
In most instances Property Management is routinely notified of new equipment purchases so items that meet the criteria are added to the College’s equipment inventory. Occasionally, however, a piece of equipment that should be added to the inventory does not come to the attention of the Property Management department. If your new equipment has not been tagged within 30 days of receipt, please contact Janet Frankl by email at frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to B217 Milne Library. Your assistance will be appreciated!
SURPLUS EQUIPMENT
All departments should direct requests to have surplus computer or related equipment removed from your department to Mark English, Manager - Technology Services via memo or email, englisme@oneonta.edu with copy to Janet Frankl at frankljl@oneonta.edu. Computer hard-drives will be reformatted, insuring removal of any sensitive information, & the equipment will be evaluated for possible reassignment to another department on campus. Direct surplus requests for non-computer equipment to Janet Frankl. Include the following data on all surplus requests: Description, SUNY-Oneonta decal number, manufacturer's serial number, condition and current location.
MOVING EQUIPMENT
The College is required by the State Comptroller to maintain accountability for its equipment at all times. SUNY Oneonta currently maintains inventory records of computers and other equipment particularly vulnerable to loss or theft with an original cost of $500 or more and other moveable equipment with an original cost of $1,500 or more. When equipment is moved between buildings and/or departments without notification to the Property Management Office the annual inventory process is unnecessarily complicated for the Departments involved and for Property Control; the otherwise positive outcome of any equipment audit is also jeopardized. When equipment has been or will be moved, notify the Property Management office immediately by email to frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to Janet Frankl B217 Milne Library. Provide the SUNY-Oneonta decal number, manufacturer's serial number, previous location and new location. Your cooperation will be very helpful and greatly appreciated. For further information, please contact Janet Frankl at x3227.
BULLETIN INFORMATION
