In anticipation of the forthcoming SUNY announcements on the 2007 - 2008 Series of Chancellor's Awards, we are proceeding now with the College's notice and plans for the awards. Our Local 2007 - 2008 SUNY Oneonta Instructions and Guidelines have been updated with attached SUNY Policies and Procedures from last year's 2006 - 2007 Award Series (no changes, other than dates, are expected in the 2007 - 2008 SUNY Policies and Procedures). Detailed Award announcements and nomination procedures are available at Graduate Studies/Continuing Education, 135 Netzer Administration Building. Nominations and Summary Presentations must be submitted to Netzer 135 by 4:00 P.M. of the LOCAL DEADLINE DATE OF TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2008. The Chancellor's Awards Competition includes: Excellence in Teaching (ET); Excellence in Librarianship (EL); Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities (ESCA); Excellence in Professional Service ((EPS); Excellence in Faculty Service (EFS); AND Distinguished Teaching Professorship (DTP); as well as Distinguished Service Professorship (DSP). DIANE DAVIDSON NAMED NEW OAS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The OAS Board has completed a national search for a new Executive Director to succeed Tom Ryder who is retiring at the end of this calendar year. The OAS Board has appointed Diane Davidson as OAS Executive Director effective January 1, 2008. Dee Davidson, an Oneonta alumna, has worked at the College since 1980. Since 1993 she has been Director of Alumni Affairs, and she has served as President of the OAS Board since 2000. She brings to this new role extensive experience and knowledge of OAS, its policies, priorities and finances, as well as a familiarity and commitment to the College. We look forward to working with Diane Davidson in this new role.
PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE
David Brenner, the Search Committee Chair, has asked the vice presidents to solicit nominations for a member of the search committee from the professional or support staff. Service on the presidential search committee is an important assignment, which will require a significant commitment of time and attention. Staff members in each division are encouraged to nominate themselves for service on this search committee. If you wish to nominate yourself, please forward your nomination in writing to your division vice president by Monday, November 12 (deadline extended from November 5). Please include a brief statement describing your role at the College and your interest in this assignment. According to the SUNY Guidelines for the Selection of a President, the appointment of a search committee member from the professional or support staff is made by the Committee Chair. All nominations received by the deadline will be considered.

LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP FOR A TUTOR
Faculty members please remind your students that the last day to sign up for a tutor this semester is Friday, November 16. Before this date, students can access our website at: http://cade.oneonta.edu/signup to apply to get a tutor for most 100 and many 200 level courses. (This site must be accessed through Internet Explorer). Students then only need to click on the “I Need a Tutor” link and follow the instructions. Students can also visit our office located in 225 Alumni or phone the Center for Academic Development and Enrichment (CADE) office at x3010, if they have any other questions or problems.
TLTC FELLOWSHIP CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The Teaching, Learning and Technology Center is pleased to announce a call for proposals for its 2007-2008 TLTC Fellowship Program. The TLTC Fellowships will provide faculty with opportunities to improve student learning through the use of technology. Fellowships are being announced with up to $30,000 planned for allocation contingent on funding. Faculty members who receive awards will be designated as TLTC Teaching Fellows for the academic year of their award. Individual fellowships can vary from $500 to $25,000, depending on the nature of the proposed initiative. The program is administered by the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center at SUNY Oneonta. STUDENTS HANDLING EXAMS
Students must not be involved in the preparation, duplication, transportation or distribution of examinations. In addition, students including undergraduate teaching assistants must not be permitted to grade, or in any manner process tests or papers. This includes using the Scan Tron machines to grade tests or quizzes and distributing graded materials to other students. If you have questions, please contact Nancy Wolters at x3216.
REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in termination of Federal funding to the college. If you will be borrowing a state vehicle and traveling more than 200 miles from the Oneonta area on a trip, you may need to use the EXXON/MOBILE gas card provided in the vehicle. Those who have been assigned a Personal Identification Number by the M.O.C. Office (vehicles are filled with gasoline before leaving Campus at M.O.C. gas pumps) are reminded that receipts for those purchases need to be turned in to Connie Jones at Facilities Operations/Maintenance Office, either by mail or in person, with the trip ticket that was provided, after your trip. YOGA SOCIETY LECTURE - TODAY
Dr. Mathew Chandrankunnel, a visiting scientist at the Harvard Physics Department, will speak on “Yoga and Christianity” from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, at the Multicultural Center, Lee Hall. Dr. Chandrankunnel is also a philosopher as well as a theologian, who holds a doctorate in “Quantum Mechanics,” from the University of Leuven, Belgium. Dr. Chandrankunnel’s talk will center on the connection
between “Yoga and Christianity” as practiced in India. He believes that Indian culture is timeless with an underpinning of spiritual dimension. Yoga as an integral part of this culture is at the same time an art, science and spiritual discipline undertaken by any ardent seeker. NOVELIST TO READ - NOVEMBER 8
The newly established Red Dragon Reading Series, funded by the Office of the President and the English Department, will present a reading by Janette Turner Hospital, author of 7 award-winning novels such as Oyster, The Last Magician, and Due Preparations for the Plague. She will give a reading from her new novel, Orpheus Lost, on Thursday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Craven Lounge. Born in Queensland, Australia, Janette Turner Hospital is regarded “as one of the best female novelists writing in English” (The Observer). Her eagerly awaited new novel, Orpheus Lost, is both a love story on a grand scale that spans America, Australia, and Baghdad and an exploration of the shattering effects of war and terrorism on our contemporary moment. This reading is free and open to the public. This event is also funded in part by Poets and Writers, Inc. with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts. In her recent book, Navigating the Badlands, Mary O’Hara-Devereaux writes that after decades of relative calm our society is headed into a period of social and organization disruption that she calls the Badlands. She predicts that during the coming decade a broad range of technological, social, and economic forces will reshape our world. Although O’Hara-Devereaux does not say much specifically about how higher education might be altered, it seems clear that these forces will also impact colleges and universities. Do we agree that these changes are coming? What effect will they have on higher education? How should colleges respond to this potential challenge? As a matter of policy, The Department of Communication Arts invites members of the college community to provide input in the reappointment considerations for members of our faculty. ANIMAL SUPPLY DRIVE COLLECTING THROUGH - NOVEMBER 15
As part of our Service Learning Project for our Consumer Resource Management class, we are launching a collection for the Susquehanna SPCA. We are collecting the following supplies: Dog and cat food, animal toys, treats, leashes, collars, animal shampoo and old blankets. Money donations can be placed in a jar at the Hunt College Union. We will be collecting these supplies from Monday, October 29 - Thursday, November 15 in Room 100, Human Ecology Building, and the Hunt College Union. There will be boxes in both locations for your convenience. All supplies will be donated to the Susquehanna SPCA. Anything you donate will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.
GLOBETROTTING CONCERT - NOVEMBER 27
The College will present GlobeTrotting, a cooperative music ensemble concert-featuring world
music and improvisation, on Tuesday, November 27 in the Hunt College Union Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend. Part of the Hewitt Pantaleoni Memorial Concert Series, the concert will feature musicians Steve Gorn on the bansuri (North Indian bamboo flute), clarinet, and soprano saxophone; John Davey playing double-bass; and Brian Melick on percussion. The concert will include original compositions by both Gorn and Davey, as well as improvisations influenced by cultures from around the world. GlobeTrotting will perform music from their new CD You Are Here, recorded at NRS Studios in Catskill and funded in part by a SUNY Creative Activity Grant. Copies of the CD will be available for purchase at the event. The concert is supported by the SUNY-Oneonta Public Events Committee, Music Department, and the Catskill Conservatory. SIEGFRIED LECTURE - NOVEMBER 29
Christine Quail, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Arts, is this year’s winner of the Richard Siegfried Junior Faculty Prize for Academic Excellence and will present the Siegfried Lecture on Thursday, November 29. Dr. Quail’s lecture titled The Hypersexualization of Girls in Media and Culture will address, in part, how the hypersexualization of girls “contributes to a culture in which girls are crafted as overly sexual at a young age.” Admission is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend the presentation in the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center at 7:30 p.m. The Siegfried Prize, which is awarded annually, recognizes a non-tenured faculty member for outstanding academic achievement outside the classroom. Alice Siegfried made a gift to the College at Oneonta Foundation to fund the prize in memory of her husband, theatre professor Richard K. Siegfried, who taught at the College from 1958 to 1995.
FIGURATIVE PAINTERS THROUGH -DECEMBER 14
figure 9 contemporary figurative painters, a group exhibit of the work of nine figurative painters, will run through Friday, December 14 in the Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibition features paintings and drawings by artists Daniel Dallman, Martha Mayer Erlebacher, Susan Moore, Truitt Seitz, Joel Sheesley, Peter Sheesley, Gary Trento, Costa Vavagiakis, and Jerome Witkin. These artists are dedicated to the use of the human form in their artwork for content and artistic concerns, and as such, some of the works depict models that are unclothed. The exhibit displays a range of traditional handling of the figure in portraiture, narrative, and in formal aesthetic composition in a rich collection of figurative work.
