SUNY-ONEONTA TO STAGE WORLD'S LARGEST SOCCER GAME
In his first year at the SUNY College at Oneonta in 1988, College President Alan B. This year on Tuesday, April 17 at 8 p.m., students, faculty, staff, and community members hope to attract over 1,000 participants to the SUNY-Oneonta All-Weather Field to honor President Donovan in the year of his retirement by playing in a game that may set a new record for the World's Largest Soccer Game. The event, proceeds of which will support the newly established Alan B. Donovan Scholarship at the College, is open to all, and members of the community are invited to participate. Volunteers are being sought to assist with the event and to play in the game. The World's Largest Soccer Game 2008 is being organized by a group of SUNY-Oneonta students, faculty, and staff, led by Student Association President Jared Lefkowitz. NEW SERVICES OFFERED BY CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER
In effort to connect with students who do not have time to visit the Career Development Center in Netzer, there are two new ways of getting their questions answered. The first new service is the Mobile Career Center which travels to Mills Hall during the spring semester (Mondays 12-1 p.m., Wednesdays 1-2 p.m., and Fridays 11 a.m.-12 p.m.) The Mobile Career Center offers the opportunity for students talk to a career staff member and pick up some career resources while they are grabbing a midday meal. The second new service is a Live Career Chat (instant messaging), which capitalizes on students who prefer to communicate via the computer. With our career chat/instant messaging, students can conveniently get questions answered while sitting in their dorm room or at home during off hours. Just go to the Career Development Center website, www.oneonta.edu/career on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. and Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. If you have questions please contact the Career Development Center at x2534 or email career@oneonta.edu.

CONGRATULATIONS
  • Congratulations to the College on the honor bestowed by The Corporation for National and Community Service by naming SUNY-Oneonta to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the second year in a row. The honor roll recognizes colleges and universities for leadership in helping to build a culture of service and civic engagement on campuses and throughout the nation. Established in 2006, the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, Campus Compact, and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. In all, 528 colleges and universities nationwide were named to this year's honor roll for their community-service activities during the 2006-2007 academic year. Recognized for having innovative, effective, and exemplary community-service programs, the honorees were selected based on criteria such as the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and service-learning courses. Service opportunities at SUNY-Oneonta are coordinated by the College's Center for Social Responsibility and Community. Founded in 1994, the center works to develop a strong sense of social responsibility in students through a range of service, volunteer, and philanthropic experiences in local, state, national, and international communities. Linda Drake serves as the Center’s director.
  • Congratulations to Veronica Diver, Political Science/Africana & Latino Studies, on being selected by the Oneonta Toastmasters to compete in the Area 11 International Speech Competition on March 8, 2008 in Greene, NY.
  • Congratulations to Steve Garner, Physical Education, on recently having had his "Kick Start" program highlighted in the Health Association of New York State "Putting Patients First" February 11th HANYS News. Steve developed and coordinated Bassett Healthcare and the Oneonta Family YMCA "Kick Start" program designed to help combat childhood obesity and to bring greater awareness of the risk factors of being overweight during early adolescence and the years beyond. Steve's approach emphasized the value of early intervention, as childhood eating and exercise habits are modified more easily than adult habits. The Kick Start program provided free clinical analysis at Bassett Healthcare's 125 Main Street Health Center, and eight weeks for free exercise classes and nutritional education. As part of HANYS state budget advocacy, HANYS is sending regular messages to the New York State Legislator describing outstanding community health initiatives. Bassett Healthcare sponsors Steve’s program, Connecting Communities for Health and Wellness.”

In addition he delivered a presentation titled "SWOT Analysis of NYS UUP: State Meets Local" in which he applied principles of public administration to the United University Professions (UUP) state and local chapter. Lastly, Compton recorded an NTESU interview for streaming video dissemination through their webpage. The interview centers on issues of union building and its challenges in the US generally and on the Oneonta campus. NTESU's webpage is located at: www.ntesu.org.za.
