NEW TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN MILNE LIBRARY OPENS
The new Technology Center located in the basement of the Milne Library is now open for business. You may have been aware that for the past five months the college has been constructing a new Technology Center in the Milne Library. Located in the old periodical room, the Technology Center is now the home of the following offices and computer labs:
Phone numbers for the above mentioned offices are still the same. Please bear with us, as we will still have some minor construction details to button up. The Technology Center is just one part of the services being brought together to create the Learning Commons environment. To learn more about the Learning Commons and the services within, stop by the Milne library. We would be happy to show you around. Also, stay tuned to the Bulletin for future updates and the Learning Commons web site.

NEW EXHIBITIIONS IN BOTH GALLERIES
The Main Gallery will feature the Annual Student Juries Art Exhibition will run from Monday, April 7-Saturday, May 17, Monday-Friday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Over 100 works of art will be on display. A reception for the artists, music and refreshments will be on Thursday, April 10 from 5-7 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the collective creative efforts. The New Gallery, will feature the exhibition Keep it Wolf by three student artists, Matthew Leach, Jerry Mascho and Katrina Mascho. It will run from Monday, April 7-Thursday, April 22, Monday-Friday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free of charge and all are welcome.
LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP FOR A TUTOR
Please remind your students the last day to sign up for a tutor will be Friday, April 18. Before this date, students can access our website at: http://cade.oneonta.edu/signup to apply to get a tutor for most 100 and many 200 level courses. (This site may be accessed through many Internet browsers, but if they have difficulty, they can use Internet Explorer). Students then only need to click on the I Need a Tutor link and follow the instructions. Students can also visit our office in 225 Alumni Hall or phone the Center for Academic Development and Enrichment (CADE) office at x3010, if they have any questions or problems.
REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in termination of Federal funding to the college. Questions regarding the privacy of student records should be directed to Maureen P. Jennifer Scanlon, Director and Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at Bowdoin College, will give a lecture, If My Husband Calls I’m Not Here’: The Beauty Parlor as Real and Representational Female Space, on Wednesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. in the Red Dragon Theater. A graduate of SUNY Oneonta and Binghamton, Dr. Scanlon is the author of many publications The lecture is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Experiences, History and History Club, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Political Science. JAZZ COMPOSERS & IMPROVISORS PROJECT TO PERFORM - APRIL 4
The Hewitt Pantaleoni Memorial Concert Series will present the Jazz Composers & Improvisors Project in a concert in the Hunt Union Ballroom on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend. The Jazz Composers & Improvisors Project features Erica Lindsay on tenor sax, Francesca Tanksley on piano, John Davey on bass, and Jeff Siegel on drums. Erica Lindsay has performed and toured with many of the biggest names in contemporary jazz. A member of the music faculty at Bard College, she composes for theater, television, and dance. She is featured in the film documentary Women in Jazz and the book American Women in Jazz. Her album Dreamer features her quintet, and she currently performs with the Oliver Lake Big Band, the Baikida Carroll Quintet, the Howard Johnson Hojo5 Quintet, the Jeff Siegel Quartet, and Trace Elements. Francesca Tanksley is an internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and composer, having performed with such notable groups as the Billy Harper Quintet and the Erica Lindsay Quintet throughout Europe, East and Southeast Asia, Scandinavia, South America, and the United States. Her compositions are featured on two of the Billy Harper Quintet's CDs, as well as her own recently released CD entitled Journey. She has been a featured artist on the National Public Radio series Piano Jazz and appears in the documentary Women in Jazz. John Davey teaches jazz bass here at the College and at Hartwick College. His first CD as a leader, entitled Sound Bites, features compositions by Davey with pianist Jeremy Wall, guitarist Chuck D'Aloia, percussionist Brian Melick, and vocalist Lorena Guillen. His chamber-jazz string trio, From The Bridge, released the CD 9 views from the bridge, and he recently released the CD You Are Here with his co-operative jazz/world music trio, GlobeTrotting. Jeff Siegel, leader of The Jeff Siegel Quartet, released a CD of original compositions, Magical Spaces, and is at work on a new CD, Live in Europe. Siegel is co-leader of The Stevens, Siegel & Ferguson Trio and The New York Trio Project. He performs regularly throughout Europe at festivals, clubs, and concerts, and he has conducted drum clinics throughout Germany and in the U.S. The appearance is co-sponsored by the Music Department, Public Events Committee, College Union Activities Council, and Catskill Conservatory. On Monday, April 7, at 4:30 p.m. in the Otsego Grille, Morris Conference Center, the Biology Department will hold its annual award ceremony. The Biology Department will present the Biology Department Scholarship, the Jan Kee Ang Memorial Award to an outstanding Senior Biology Major, the Jan Kee Ang Scholarship award, and the John G. New Scholarships. At the same time a representative of Corning Inc. will present the Corning Award for Excellence in Microbiology. The recipient of the Biological Field Station Summer 2008 Internship will also be announced at this time. WEBPAGE FOR FACULTY AND STAFF CONCERNED ABOUT DISTRESSED OR DISTURBED STUDENTS
The Counseling Center has developed a webpage for faculty and staff to access when they encounter distressed or disturbed students. In addition to basic information about Counseling Center services, the page has information about how to recognize and assist students in psychological distress. There are resources and strategies for handling students in crisis and tips on how to make an effective referral for counseling. There is also a link to strategies for managing emotionally laden classroom discussions. The link for this webpage is: HERE. APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THE ASHOK KUMAR MALHOTRA SEVA FACULTY AWARD - APRIL 25
The College is pleased to announce a new award for compassionate service to others (Hindi: Seva). Funded by an endowment created by Dr. Ashok Malhotra, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy, the annual award will provide college-wide recognition, $1000, and an opportunity to share one’s work with a broad audience. Nominations and submissions are invited from all SUNY-Oneonta faculty. Criteria include: 1) exemplary record of community service (locally, nationally, &/or internationally), 2) ability to motivate others to perform community service, 3) record of integrating community service into the teaching and learning process, and 4) ability to give a 45-minute presentation concerning items #1-3. Chairs and program directors should encourage applications from qualified individuals. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 25. BOTTLE DRIVE FUNDRAISER FOR CAMP-CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
As part of a service-learning project for Consumer Resource Management class, there will be a Bottle Drive held on Saturday, April 5th 2008 benefiting local children with Autism. The money will be used to send autistic children to a summer camp that costs $1,300 per child. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. The drop off time will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Denny’s in Oneonta. Please bring any deposit recyclables there. Thank you!
THE CINDERELLA PROJECT IS BACK!
The goal of this service learning project is to provide free dresses and accessories to teens in the community who dream of going to the prom, but may not be able to afford to purchase these items. Students from the Consumer Resource Management classes are collecting donations of prom dresses, shawls, handbags, jewelry, and shoes. Anyone looking to clean out their closet is encouraged to bring these items down to Ann Steen in Human Ecology Room 100 by Thursday, April 10.
NEW ARRIVAL BASKETS
As a service-learning project with Rose Avanzato’s Consumer Science Class, students through volunteer efforts from the community would like to provide new families with New Arrival Baskets. These baskets will include products and samples that have been donated by baby care companies and the community. We are asking for small donations which include baskets, diapers, wipes, clothing, bottles, pacifiers, baby lotions, receiving blankets, other small miscellaneous items for newborns, or if possible, small monetary donations to purchase these items. Please drop off donations in Room 100, Human Ecology. We will be collecting until the second week of April. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated!
