Bulletin for April 9, 2008

RECOGNIZE OUR STUDENT EMPLOYEES
The College has designated Wednesday, April 16, as “Student Employment Day” to recognize the many important contributions our student employees make to the campus community. Many colleges nationwide will honor their student employees during National Student Employment Week, April 13-19. We employ approximately 1,200 students on campus. Nearly every area of campus benefits from their service as resident assistants, lab monitors, dining hall workers, academic team members, office assistants, and in countless other roles. Our student workers attend to their academic responsibilities, participate in extra curricular activities, and find time to be loyal and dependable employees. I ask that you take a moment on Wednesday, April 16, to recognize our student employees and to thank them for their dedication to the College.
Alan Donovan

SUNY-ONEONTA COLLEGE COUNCIL MEETING - TODAY
The College Council of the State University of New York College at Oneonta will meet today, Wednesday, April 9, at 8 p.m. in 104 Morris Conference Center. At the meeting, College President Alan B. Donovan will deliver a report on the College. The Council will also receive an update on the presidential search. Each state-operated campus in the SUNY system has its own College Council. The governor appoints the members of each council for seven-year terms with the exception of the student representative, who is elected by the student body. College Councils have specific statutory powers, such as naming buildings and making regulations regarding student conduct. Council meetings are public, and each council meets at least four times a year.

PUBLIC EVENTS COMMITTEE PROPOSALS REQUEST
The State College Senate Public Relations Committee has funding to assist in the production of lectures, cultural events or other programs having an appeal to both the campus and community-taking place on campus during the 2008-2009 academic years. Although exceptions are occasionally made, the limited funding made available to the Committee usually limits the total funding through the PE Committee to no more than $1,000 per event. A reasonable budget on the funding application submission and a clear date for the event increases the chances for proposal acceptance. Grants are made to active or retired SUNY-Oneonta faculty or staff members. The College budget and the College Foundation support funding. Submission deadline is Friday, May 2. For your convenience, an application form is attached to this issue of the Bulletin. For information contact Rene Prins, P.E.C. Chair, Fine Arts 123, email prinsr@oneonta.edu, or phone x3422.

KEEP SUNY-Shine INFORMED
SUNY-Shine needs your help! In order for the fund to be effective, information about persons who are hospitalized, weddings, births, deaths, exceptional hardships, etc., need to be reported. Please do not assume that someone else will provide the information to the SUNY-Shine Committee. If anyone on campus has information that the SUNY-Shine Committee needs to be aware of, please take the time to phone Rose Thomas x2748, or send a note to the Community Relations Office, 301 Netzer Administration Building. Funding for SUNY-Shine is made possible on an annual basis through gifts and grants to the College Foundation.

MOVING EQUIPMENT
The College is required by the State Comptroller to maintain accountability for its equipment at all times. SUNY Oneonta currently maintains inventory records of computers and other equipment particularly vulnerable to loss or theft with an original cost of $500 or more and other moveable equipment with an original cost of $1,500 or more. When equipment is moved between buildings and/or departments without notification to the Property Management Office the annual inventory process is unnecessarily complicated for the Departments involved and for Property Control; the otherwise positive outcome of any equipment audit is also jeopardized. When equipment has been or will be moved, notify the Property Management office immediately by email to frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to Janet Frankl B217 Milne Library. Provide the SUNY-Oneonta decal number, manufacturer's serial number, previous location and new location. Your cooperation will be very helpful and greatly appreciated. For further information, please contact Janet Frankl at x3227.

USING COLLEGE-OWNED EQUIPMENT OFF CAMPUS
Appropriate approval is required for off-campus use of College-owned equipment. Send inquiries regarding off-campus use of College-owned equipment to Janet Frankl by email to frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to B217 Milne Library. Technology Services in Milne Library has independent authority to grant approval for equipment under its jurisdiction.

HINDSIGHT IS NO LONGER 20/20
You can make it count for someone else! Do you have a great piece of advice for students as they enter the work force or graduate school or even just the world of "real grown ups"? The Leadership Institute committee would like to incorporate your knowledge into this year’s program. Please send your ideas to Rebecca Harrington at harrinrl@oneonta.edu.

  • Congratulations to Patrick E. Brown of Feura Bush, N.Y. on his appointment as Chair of the College Council of the SUNY College at Oneonta by Governor David Paterson. Mr. Brown replaces David W. Brenner, who served as Chair of the College Council since 2000. Dr. Brenner will serve out the two remaining years in his term on the Council and will continue as Chair of the College's Presidential Search Committee. Patrick Brown, a founding member of the Albany law firm of Brown McMahon & Weinraub LLC, graduated from the College at Oneonta in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in Political Science. After his graduation from the Pace University School of Law in 1983, he served as Law Assistant and later Chief Law Assistant to the New York State Court of Appeals in Albany. In 1987, he joined the office of Governor Mario Cuomo as Assistant Counsel to the Governor and later served as First Assistant Counsel to the Governor. Mr. Brown served as Director of the Office of Industry and Community Relations for the New York State Department of Economic Development in 1994 before joining the law firm of Plunkett & Jaffe, PC, in 1995. Each state-operated campus in the SUNY system has its own College Council. College Councils have specific statutory powers, such as naming buildings and making regulations regarding student conduct. The governor with the exception of the student representative who is elected by the student body, appoints the members of each council.

This paper, part of longer study on gender and ethical questions in Shakespeare, has been chosen as part of a select group of essays from the seminar to appear in Shakespeare and Moral Agency, edited by Michael Bristol.

  • Orlando Legname, Music, had his multimedia composition Agua de Pingo selected for performance at the 2008 Society of Composers Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, February 21, 2008. The concert took place at the Kopleff Recital Hall in the Georgia State University campus. Agua de Pingo is a piece based exclusively on real sounds from the heartbeat of the composer’s daughter (Natalia Legname) inside the womb combined with sounds she made during a bath with her mom (Anna Legname) when she was 4 years and 5 months old. These sounds were transformed using Digital Signal Processing techniques and no other computer-generated sounds were added. Anna Legname taped the original video from Natalia playing with a fish tank and the images were also transformed using digital manipulation techniques. The performance includes live electronics and live video manipulation.
  • John Relethford, Anthropology, is the author of an entry entitled Modern human origins: The ‘Out of Africa’ debate in the online Encyclopedia of Life Sciences, John Wiley and Sons. This article reviews different models for the origin of modern humans and the fossil and genetic evidence supporting them. The evidence points to an African origin of modern humans between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago, but it is still not clear if there was any genetic mixture with human populations outside of Africa, such as the Neandertals.
  • Hua Zhong, Management, Marketing and Information Systems, published a research paper in Operations Research Letters, 35(2), 186-194, 2007. His paper, titled Container Vessel Scheduling with Bi-directional Flows considers a strongly NP-hard container vessel scheduling problem with bi-directional flows. It shows that a special case of this problem is solvable as a linear program. This property is then used to design a heuristic for the general case. The paper is co-authored with L. Lei and Z.-L. Chen.
