KEEP SUNY-Shine INFORMED
SUNY-Shine needs your help! In order for the fund to be effective, information about persons who are hospitalized, weddings, births, deaths, exceptional hardships, etc., need to be reported. Please do not assume that someone else will provide the information to the SUNY-Shine Committee. If anyone on campus has information that the SUNY-Shine Committee needs to be aware of, please take the time to phone Rose Thomas at x2748, or send a note to the Community Relations Office, 301 Netzer Administration Building. Funding for SUNY-Shine is made possible on an annual basis through gifts and grants to the College Foundation.

MOVING EQUIPMENT
The College is required by the State Comptroller to maintain accountability for its equipment at all times. SUNY Oneonta currently maintains inventory records of computers and other equipment particularly vulnerable to loss or theft with an original cost of $500 or more and other moveable equipment with an original cost of $1,500 or more. When equipment is moved between buildings and/or departments without notification to the Property Management Office the annual inventory process is unnecessarily complicated for the Departments involved and for Property Control; the otherwise positive outcome of any equipment audit is also jeopardized. When equipment has been or will be moved, notify the Property Management office immediately by email to frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to Janet Frankl B217 Milne Library. Provide the SUNY-Oneonta decal number, manufacturer's serial number, previous location and new location. Your cooperation will be very helpful and greatly appreciated. For further information, please contact Janet Frankl at x3227.

USING COLLEGE EQUIPMENT OFF CAMPUS
Appropriate approval is required for off-campus use of College-owned equipment. Send inquiries regarding off-campus use of College-owned equipment to Janet Frankl by email to frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to B217 Milne Library. Technology Services in Milne Library has independent authority to grant approval for equipment under its jurisdiction.

ADDING NEW EQUIPMENT TO INVENTORY
In most instances Property Management is routinely notified of new equipment purchases so items that meet the criteria are added to the College’s equipment inventory. Occasionally, however, a piece of equipment that should be added to the inventory does not come to the attention of the Property Management department. If your new equipment has not been tagged within 30 days of receipt, please contact Janet Frankl by email at frankljl@oneonta.edu or by memo to B217 Milne Library. Your assistance will be appreciated!

SURPLUS EQUIPMENT
All departments should direct requests to have surplus computer or related equipment removed from your department to Mark English, Manager - Technology Services via memo or email, englisme@oneonta.edu with copy to Janet Frankl at frankljl@oneonta.edu. Computer hard-drives will be reformatted, insuring removal of any sensitive information, & the equipment will be evaluated for possible reassignment to another department on campus. Direct surplus requests for non-computer equipment to Janet Frankl. Include the following data on all surplus requests: Description, SUNY-Oneonta decal number, manufacturer's serial number, condition and current location.

Additional awards were presented to students from Marshall University, Pennsylvania State University, Reed College, Trinity University, University of North Carolina, University of Oregon, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Congratulations to the 2008 graduating Senior Class on ensuring that an Oneonta landmark--the pillars of Old Main, the first building at the College--will be around for generations to come. The Class of 2008established the Preserve the Pillars Fund, as their class project which provided funding to restore the pillars and to maintain them in the future. On Wednesday, May 7, the pillars were re-dedicated, and the seniors participated in the senior "Pass Through the Pillars," becoming the first graduating class to complete the tradition as both freshmen and seniors. The pillars of Old Main, the building that housed the Oneonta Normal School when it opened in 1889, are a symbol of the history of the College. Founded as a training school for teachers, the College consisted of one building--Old Main--until the addition of the campus school in Bugbee Hall in 1933. As the College's mission diversified, today's modern campus was developed to meet the new needs. Old Main was sold and subsequently demolished in the 1970s, but the pillars were preserved on a hillside near Fitzelle Hall. In recent years, incoming freshman classes have passed through the pillars at the beginning of the fall semester as a symbol of their joining the campus community. Senior classes have passed through the pillars in the late spring to recognize their graduation. The Class of 2008 will be the first to complete the tradition as both freshmen and seniors. More information about the senior class project and the events celebrating the pillars is available from the Office of Alumni Affairs at x2526.

  • Brian Haley, Anthropology, has published a commentary in American Anthropologist, titled Tveskov’s Straw Man: A Response to ‘Social Identity and Culture Change on the Southern Northwest Coast.’ In a lead article in the same journal last September, Mark Tveskov used Haley’s co-authored article on neo-Chumash ethnogenesis in California (How Spaniards Became Chumash, and Other Tales of Ethnogenesis), AA, Sept 2005), as a straw man for an argument favoring continuity of Native American ethnic identities over long spans of time. Haley’s response states that Tveskov has misrepresented his work by claiming it addresses an indigenous Native American group when it explicitly does not. Haley also points out circular reasoning by Tveskov, and the error of his characterization Haley’s position as anti-indigenous and neo-colonialist.
  • Achim Koeddermann, Philosophy, chaired the plenary of the international conference on Decision Ethics at Lincoln Center, NY on April 26, 2008. The conference was dedicated to conflict resolution, ranging from a debate between American Pragmatists and Deans of Business schools with Marxist diplomats and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, to debates between Near East diplomats regarding a possible framework for a future, more effective UN. This event brought together industry professionals and academics from companies, governmental agencies, and universities around the world to exchange information on advances in mobile communications and wireless networking technology, applications, management, and security. In her paper, Dr. Lokshina presented the core network model of universal mobile telecommunication system with calls that arrive randomly and are granted service based on specific service class, required maximum and minimum bandwidth, and available network resources. Performance of priority-based dynamic capacity allocation, suitable for the wireless ATM system was analyzed. Scheduling of the ATM cell transmission in each time division multiple access frame for the uplink was based on a priority scheme. Blocking probability and throughout parameters for bandwidth sharing policy were considered, and partial overlap link was implemented. The clustering procedure for the mobile communication networks performance assessment was developed where the blocking probability and throughput measurements were introduced with a low-dimensional Markov reward model enhanced with vector quantification and neural modeling. The link occupancy probability distribution was optimized using neural network that was trained on the base of Kohonen rules. Dr. Lokshina discussed simulation and analyzed the numerical results. The paper was published in the WTS 2008 refereed proceedings.
  • Ashok Kumar Malhotra, Philosophy, was invited to participate at a conference on Indian Subcontinent: Past and Present held at Kutztown University, Kutztown, Pennsylvania, on March 30 -31, 2008. His presentation dealt with the theme of the Dalai Lama’s Vision of Religion as Service. The conference was sponsored by the office of International Education that invited two dozen speakers/scholars from India, Pakistan, Europe, Canada and the USA.
  • Daniel G. Payne, English, recently had his third book, Writing the Land: John Burroughs and his Legacy, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, U.K. The book is an edited collection of essays from the “Sharp Eyes” conference on John Burroughs and nature writing held biannually at SUNY College at Oneonta.
