THANK YOU
  • Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Thank you so much for your interest and response for information about the Connecting Communities for Health and Wellness program that is sponsored by Bassett Healthcare. This past year, I received 62 e-mails from you who have suggested ideas and/or would like more information about this unique program. Your interest in community health and what can be done to improve the lives of our friends and neighbors is truly inspirational. When I started the program about a year ago, I had no idea about the tremendous response I would get. Locally, we started a program with the YMCA called Kick Start, which addresses the seriousness of childhood obesity and the problems associated with overweightness in early years. Statistics show us that we are raising a generation of children who might not live as long as their parents for the first time in history. As a result of some of your ideas, we have developed the Healthy Start Breakfast for diabetes awareness, and we are now looking at ways to assist our schools with meeting their School Health Index goals through collaborative efforts and potential grants. All and all, it has been quite a year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with future ideas and suggestions, especially if they improve the lives of those who are disadvantaged. The health and welfare of our communities is everyone's responsibility. Thank you for helping me connect with our communities for health and wellness.
    Steve Garner, Physical Education/Community Relations.
  • I want to thank my co-workers, friends and members of the campus community for all of your support and prayers during my mother’s illness and her recent passing. I am grateful to all of you for the cards, plants, gifts, phone calls and condolences. Thank you to the Netzer 2nd floor Finance and Administration Staff and to the SUNY Shine Fund for their donations to Catskill Area Hospice in my mother’s memory. I am fortunate to work in such a supportive community.
    Melissa Nicosia, Sponsored Programs
CONGRATULATIONS
  • I am pleased to announce that Michele Luettger has accepted the offer to become the next Director of Residential Community Life. Miki's experience and expertise have positioned her well to assume this key leadership role. Miki will begin her new position on June 1st.

FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
  • Ashok Kumar Malhotra, Philosophy, published a paper on Perspectives on Mysticism in the Journal of the Faculty of Religious Studies, McGill University, Canada, in Volume 35: 2007 on Essays on Mysticism and Phenomenology. His paper was chosen to be the first essay in the volume because it “presents a lucid overview of mystical traditions and their founders in India and China, as well as a summary of classic phenomenological categories developed in the West by Walter T. Stace and William James.”
  • John Relethford, Anthropology, published a review article entitled “Genetic evidence and the modern human origins debate” in the recent issue of the journal Heredity (100:555-563, 2008). This review addresses recent developments in the use of genetic data from living populations and ancient DNA in addressing questions regarding the African origin and subsequent evolution of modern humans over the past 200,000 years.
