NEW NYS PROGRAM FOR EMPLOYEES
To all state employees: The Governor’s Office of Employee Relations is announcing a new program to allow New York State employees to pay for certain work-related transportation expenses on a pre-tax basis. In an effort to support a greener New York and to help state employees save money, beginning July 2, 2008 for the October 2008 benefit month, NYS-Ride is being expanded to all New York State employees. This program does not reimburse your public transportation costs but does allow for qualifying expenses to be deducted from your paycheck on a pretax basis. Some carriers in this area include Oneonta Public Transport (OPT), Broome County Transit, Chenango County Public Transit, T-Tran, Adirondack Trailways, and Amtrak North East. Online enrollment begins July 2, 2008. Check your campus mail for an informational flyer and an optional NYS-Ride Employee Information Meeting Schedule. FACULTY/STAFF ACTIVITIES
  • Paul Adamo, Vice President for College Advancement, was an invited speaker at the SUNY CUAD 2008 Educational Conference, June 11-13, 2008 in NYC. His presentation was part of a panel discussion What’s Hot and What’s Not: Making Hiring Decisions on Development Officers in the Development Track. He was joined on the panel by colleagues from Stony Brook and Binghamton.
  • Izabella Lokshina, Management, Marketing and Information Systems, presented her research paper titled Modeling And Simulation Of Feedback Seismic Structural Control, at the Industrial Simulation Conference, ISC 2008 on June 10, 2008 in Lyon, France. This event was organized by the European Technology Institute (ETI); sponsored by the European Simulation Society (EUROSIS) together with ADICTEL, AEKI, CREAX, ENSAIT, Delft University of Technology, Ghent University and IPK Fraunhofer; and hosted by University of Lyon. In her paper, co-authored with Dr. Svetla Radeva from University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofia, Bulgaria, Dr. Lokshina discussed an approach to modeling and simulation of feedback seismic structural control with active mass drivers. Most of the current research on active structural control for seismic protection has focused on either full state feedback strategies or velocity feedback strategies. However, accurate measurement of the necessary displacements and velocities of the structure is difficult to achieve directly, particularly during seismic activity. As accelerometers are inexpensive and can readily provide reliable measurements of the structural acceleration at the strategic points on the structure, development of control methods based on acceleration feedback control is an ideal solution to this problem. Dr. Lokshina demonstrated efficiency of the acceleration feedback mass driver systems to reduce response of the seismically excited structures. The paper was published in the ISC 2008 refereed proceedings.
  • Margaret Maguire, Management, Marketing and Information Systems, participated in a Type Trainers Skillshop sponsored by the Center for Application of Psychological Type and Otto Kroeger Associates in Fairfax Virginia June 30-July 2, 2008. The purpose of the three-day experiential workshop was to train participants to design and deliver high impact workshops based on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.
